Will Ronda Rousey vs. Cris “Cyborg” Justino Ever Happen?

Women’s MMA is slowly growing with the UFC now having two female divisions, as well as Invicta FC, an all-female promotion, putting on shows on UFC Fight Pass for millions around the world to see. However, there still may be some fans around the world who just aren’t comfortable with seeing two women fight inside of a cage.

Last weekend (February 27, 2015 and February 28, 2015) may have changed their minds, as the two best female fighters on the planet put on spectacular performances, truly showcasing the talent and athleticism of female mixed martial artists.

First, last Friday, Cris “Cyborg” Justino defended her featherweight title in the main event of Invicta FC 11 against Charmaine Tweet. “Cyborg” finished the fight in under a minute, landing a big shot that dropped Tweet and finishing her off with a flurry of shots on the ground.

Then came Saturday night at UFC 184, when fans were treated to the very best women’s fighter on the planet, reigning bantamweight queen “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey. Rousey was putting her title on the line against what was considered her toughest test to date in “Alpha” Cat Zingano. However, the “Rowdy” one proved herself and shocked the world by finishing the fight in just 16-seconds with her patented arm bar.

These two have been linked for years now as the best of the best when it comes to female fighters, and the question of if they would ever square off in a super fight has always surfaced, but it has now hit an all-time high with both ladies winning so dominantly only one day a part.

So, will we ever see Rousey and “Cyborg” standing across from each other inside of the Octagon?

It’s hard a question to answer for sure. I definitely think the fight could happen, but there are a few things that need to happen first, a few road blocks that need to be cleared.

First off, the two currently compete under two different promotions, which I don’t believe is really too big of an issue. If the fight became a reality, I believe Invicta FC would let Justino go to pursue the Rousey fight, or make some sort of deal with the UFC which allowed the fight to happen.

The real issue here, is the weight discrepancy. While Rousey is the queen of the UFC’s 135-pound division, “Cyborg” competes at 145-pounds. And not only that, but the Brazilian is an absolutely huge featherweights. Reports surfaced that she was 175-pounds after her Invicta FC 11 performance.

Justino was preparing to cut down to 135-pounds before she got injured, and she claims that she will be trying again, but one has to wonder how safe this is. She already endures a brutal cut down to featherweight and cutting 10 more pounds may be life threatening.

The possibility of a catch weight bout has been brought up numerous times, but is always shut down by Rousey who refuses to move up and meet “Cyborg” due to the Brazilian’s previous issues with performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).

So for me, the only way this fight happens is if “Cyborg” can get down to 135-pounds healthily. She would probably have to fight at bantamweight once or twice before signing on to fight Rousey as well. However, I don’t think “Cyborg” should cut down due to the safety risks, but I also don’t think that will stop her from trying. This is the biggest money making fight in women’s MMA and Justino knows that. She also knows that with a win, she would be considered the best female fighter in the world.

So will this fight happen? I can’t really answer that question, but I do believe the Invicta champ will attempt to make it happen, and it will be all on her. What do you think, will we ever see Rousey vs. “Cyborg” for the UFC bantamweight title?
