White on Cormier: He’d be a beast at 205

Speaking at last weekend’s UFC on FX 7, Dana White addressed one of the most talented fighters who’s never fought in the Octagon in Daniel Cormier. Cormier, who faces Frank Mir on April 20th, has been rumored to make the drop to Light Heavyweight in order to avoid a potential title clash with friend and teammate Cain Velasquez. White spoke up with the following (via 5th Round):

“I want [Cormier] wherever he wants to be,” White expressed over the weekend. “I just think that’s where he’s going to end up. The relationship with Cain, he’s Cain’s wrestling coach. I think that’s what they’re going to have to do. They’re going to have him go to 205 [pounds].
“Or who knows? Maybe they will fight. Maybe they’ll say, ‘We’re pros, here. We can fight.’ I don’t think so, but I’m just saying maybe.”

“I think he’s awesome. But at 205, I think he’d be a beast.”

Cormier has been one of the fastest-rising Heavyweights recently, having destroyed Bigfoot Silva, the current UFC Heavyweight title challenger. He then went on to handily outclass the highly experienced Josh Barnett to win the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix. Last seen dismantling the much lesser-known Dion Staring at Srikeforce’s last show ever, Cormier stated his intentions to beatchampion Jon Jones after his TKO win.

But Cormier has also been linked with health problems from his massive amount of weight cuts as a collegiate and Olympic wrestler. He may want to dodge fighting Velasquez at all costs, but is it worth the potential high price of his health?
