Weili Zhang Finally Gets U.S. Visa Approved
UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang has finally gotten her United States Visa approved after some early hurdles. After capturing the 115-pound title from Jessica Andrade in shocking fashion earlier this year in China, Zhang is expected to make her first-ever title defense in the United States.
UFC president Dana White said he wanted to bring Zhang to the states to fight after her impressive win over Andrade. Early issues with her Visa hindered those plans, but according to MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin, those concerns have been squared away.
It will be interesting to see who Zhang matches up with next. Of course, tonight’s (Sat. October 12, 2019) UFC Tampa main event could answer that very question. Former division queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk will take on “The Karate Hottie” Michelle Waterson. The two top-ranked strawweights are considered to be fighting for the opportunity to step into the Octagon with Zhang for her first-ever title defense.
Earlier this week, Jedrzejczyk noted she has been keeping her eye on the new champion, and even predicted her first-round win over a shared former foe in Andrade.
“Yes, I’m very impressed with the new strawweight champ, and I said that she was going to win in the first round with Jessica Andrade,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s a very good fighter and in the UFC, maybe the strawweight division is the lightest division in the UFC, but definitely this division gets lots of attention and brings lots of fireworks with every fight.”
Who would you like to see Zhang face in her first-ever title defense?
