UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum once again upset the odds at UFC 188, putting his name up there with the best P4P (pound-for-pound) fighters on the planet with his monumental win. Cain Velasquez was simply no match for the resurgent Brazilian grappler on fight night, falling to a third round submission in front of the crowds in Mexico City, Mexico. For ‘Vai Cavalo’, it was an achievement of a lifetime.

Also featured on the card was a closely fought co-main event between former Bellator and Strikeforce lightweight champions Eddie Alvarez and Gilbert Melendez. ‘El Nino’ came out blasting in round one, rocking ‘The Silent Assassin’ with a series of elbows and punches, swelling his eye shut and leaving him a bloody mess.

It looked as though Melendez might have been back on the winning track, but a close round three sealed the deal on the judge’s scorecards for a jubilant Alvarez and a distraught Melendez. Yair Rodriguez and Charles Rosa also collided on the card, providing a thoroughly entertaining bout, with Rodriguez capturing the hard-earned win.
