UFC 169 Prelims Results And Recap

UFC 169 is underway at The Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey and the preliminaries are in the books. First up were Neil Magny and Gasan Umalatov in a Welterweight affair. Magny looked very impressive, with much improved grappling and stand up, and won a one-sided decision.

Tony Martin and Rashid Magomedov threw down in the second bout of the evening at Lightweight. This was a close, gritty affair between the two promotional debutants; Magomedov showed great defense against Martin’s submission game, and implemented his solid striking en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Clint Hester vs. Andy Enz rounded off the fight pass prelims at Middleweight, in a battle between TUF 17 veterans. After an entertaining three round slugfest, it was Hester who took the nod from the judges by UD.

On to the Fox Sports 1 prelims, and first up is a LW scrap between Al Iaquinta and Kevin Lee. What a great fight this was; both guys came close to finishing each other in the first two rounds, and the third round was a total barn burner. The Serra-Longo product Al Iaquinta takes home the UD.

Nick Catone threw down with Tom Watson in another Middleweight tilt next, and the skinny on this fight was Watson’s leg kicks. Catone was almost unable to walk by round three but somehow managed to get the nod on the judge’s scorecards. I guess two or three takedowns are worth more than actually causing damage with strikes.

Chris Cariaso and Danny Martinez have unfinished business at Flyweight now, and I’m hoping for a finish here. Alas, it was another three round affair, although it was entertaining. Head kicks galore for Cariaso, who takes the decision.

Lastly on the prelims card is a Lightweight scrap between John Makdessi and Alan Patrick and I am pumped for this one. Makdessi stuffed nearly all of Patrick’s takedown attempts and beat him up on the feet. Somehow, the judges decide that Alan Patrick did enough to win, what a disgraceful piece of officiating.
