UFC 165 Prelims Results And Recap

UFC 165 is well under way in Toronto, Canada, with the prelims in the books. The card opened with the Facebook Prelims, and a Heavyweight bout between Nandor Guelmino and Daniel Omielanczuk.1350472600Daniel

The bout was pretty stale to be honest, with a lot of clinching and not much action. After both men laid claim to a round each, Omielanczuk landed a brutal series of punches to Guelmino’s dome in the third. NG went down and was out like a light.

Next up Alex Caceres and Roland Delorme went to war for three hard rounds. The two Bantamweights exchanged busy strikes on the feet and some technical grappling exchanges.

Coming in to the third round, Delorme was showing the fight in his face; bloodied and swollen with Caceres looking the fresher fighter. ‘Bruce Leroy’ landed some very precise strikes to the dome in the last round, scoring a total of 91 standing strikes at a 60% accuracy rate. Caceres walks away victorious by split decision, and scores his third win in his last four.

Hometown favorite Jesse Ronson stepped up on short notice to fight Michel Prezeres for his UFC debut in the third bout of the night. Ronson, a team Tompkins product, faced a solid grappler in Prezeres and was thrown around in the opening stanza.

Ronson gutted out the first but wound up straight back on the mat in the second, but was able to get the fight back to the stand up briefly. Ronson has some nasty kickboxing and he lands some heavy kicks.

jesse ronson11Ronson showcases some slick footwork in the third, landing frequently with kicks and punches. Prezeres is a little tired; maybe the weight cut to 155 was hard for him. Ronson lands a monstrous slam and swarms for the finish, but it may be too late as the buzzer sounds. Great show by Ronson, but ‘Tractor’ takes the decision.

Lastly on the FB card was John Makdessi vs. Renee Forte in another LW scrap. I’ve always had Makdessi marked as a beast, and he uncorked a beauty of a right hand in the first round; proving my point. A laser accurate right behind Forte’s ear and some g’n’p to finish, and ‘The Bull’ has now won three on the bounce.

On to the Fox section of the card and and Dustin Kimura squares off against Mitch Gagnon at 135. This was a great fight from the jump, both guys rocking each other with big shots to the body and the head.

Kimura’s face was battered and his unbeaten record was shattered when Gagnon sunk in a tight guillotine choke and put Kimura’s lights out cold. This is a great card so far man.

On to the second scrap, and Stephen Thompson goes up against Chris Clements at Welterweight. It was a good back and forth first round, with both guys landing some hard strikes. Thompson had an edge in the ground game.

Thompson opened the second with more flashy kicks and clocked Clements early on. CC was able to hang on momentarily, but two big right hands sent Clements falling against the fence with his eyes rolling; Great knockout for ‘Wonderboy’.

After an awesome ad for ‘Being Mike Tyson’, Ivan Menjivar looked to improve his number 10 Bantamweight ranking against debuting Brazilian Wilson Reis. Menjivar is a seasoned veteran, but Reis’ solid stand up and high pace was very impressive.

Reis landed some solid takedowns in the first two rounds, imposing his will with heavy strikes from the guard.

Reis’ solid wrestling and aggressive strikes earns him the decision win. Rounding out the prelims was Myles Jury and Mike Ricci at 155lbs. After a bit of a tentative first round, they loosened up and started to open up in the stand up.

Ricci used his long kicks and elbows to punish Jury, who was able to land some good right hands. The crowd booed, obviously, and the second round ended without much action again. The third round was mainly fought against the cage with Jury attempting to take Ricci’s back, and Joe Rogan was not impressed with this fight. A decision win for Jury in a very forgettable fight.
