UFC 164 Prelims Results And Recap

UFC 164 is underway and it has really got off to a great start. The facebook prelims were up first.

The Middleweights kicked off the evening in a match up between Jarred Hamman and Magnus Cedenblad. This one was over quicker than it started, as Jarred shoots for a takedown and Cedenblad rolled him in to full mount and secured a watertight guillotine choke that put Hamman to sleep. Cedenblad’s 8th first round finish, he calls out Dylan Andrews in his post fight spiel.

Next up was Ryan Couture vs Al Iaquinta at 155lbs. and these two guys went to war. Iaquinta exhibited some great power punching, and Couture displayed some nasty kicks and knees. In the end Iaquinta’s power striking was too much for Couture, who has an incredible chin. Iaquinta takes the decision.

Finally on the facebook prelims was a Heavyweight bout between Sao Palelei and Nikita Krylov. After a dominating first round, Palelei seemed to gas terribly while complaining of a broken rib. Krylov proceeded to gas out after the second, which led to a clinchfest of a third round. Palelei landed up in mount and mustered enough energy to score a TKO win over the Ukranian KO artist. Palelei returns victorious (kinda).

On to the Fox Sports Prelims and Chico Camus took on Kyung Ho Kang in a Bantamweight scrap to open the card.

After scoring a round each, Kang and Camus went at it in the third; big punches and kicks were fired off until Kang secured a takedown and controlled the hometown favorite. Camus came back strong, rocking Kang and earning the decision win. I had scored it the other way.

Pascal Krauss went up against Hyung Gyu Lim in a Welterweight attraction next, and it was an absolute barn burner. Lim came out looking for the finish, and after some great exchanges, he caught Krauss with a huge right hand. After a big knee, Krauss was out and Lim wins by knockout. 2-0 with two KO’s for Lim in the UFC.

Flyweights Louis Gaudinot and Tim Elliott were up next, and once again we were treated to a taste of how good Flyweight fights are. These two beat the ever-loving crap out of each other, with Elliott taking the fight with his relentless style. Solid wrestling and strange stand up earned him the win tonight.

Jamie Varner and Gleison Tibau rounded off a great set of prelims, as they went to war at 155. Varner displayed some good striking in the opening round, but it was Tibau who controlled the second with his wrestling. Varner came on very strong in the third, rocking Tibau and scoring a couple takedowns of his own. Tibau takes the split decision in a good scrap.
