UFC Rankings Update: “Rumble” Moves Up To No. 3

This past Saturday’s (October 25, 2014) UFC 179 pay-per-view (PPV) from Ginásio do Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, provided an action-packed title fight in the form of Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes II.

Longtime titleholder Aldo may have kept the belt, but he didn’t emerge unscathed. For his efforts (which left Aldo bruised and bloodied), Mendes held onto his No. 1 ranking at 145 pounds.

There was some movement in the UFC’s most talked-about division, however, as Dustin Poirier, Dennis Bermudez, and Nik Lentz all moved up one spot to Nos. 6, 7, and 9, respectively. After it was found out that Chan Sung Jung will miss the next two years while serving a mandatory two years in the South Korean military, “The Korean Zombie” moved down to No. 8.

The other division that saw the most change was light heavyweight after previous No. 5 contender Phil Davis beat previous No. 4 contender Glover Teixeira in the UFC 179 co-main event. “Mr. Wonderful” moved up to No. 5 while Teixeira slid to No. 6.

The last man to defeat Davis, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, surprisingly moved up two spots to No. 3 despite an indefinite suspension while under investigation for domestic violence. Out since UFC 167 in November 2013, former champion Rashad Evans dropped to No. 4.
