UFC on Fuel TV 3 Results Recap: Chan Sung Jung makes a title shot statement
Tonight UFC on Fuel TV 3 delivered a great night of fights for the fans from Fairfax, Virginia. The main card brought some unbelievable action to the table with six battles.
In the main event Featherweights Chan Sung Jung and Dustin Poirier put on quite the show. They went back-and-forth with takedowns and displays of grappling, with “The Korean Zombie” opening a cut on Poirier’s forehead early on. Poirier was in the guard in the second, absorbing shots. Sang Jung landed some huge knees and punches, eventually mounting Poirier. Sang Jung went for some chain submission attempts, and somehow Poirier landed on top. The third round brought a takedown from the clinch by Sang Jung, followed by a big knee. Poirier landed some significant strikes, finding his range. However, in the fourth round “The Korean Zombie” rocked Poirier and then finished him with an impressive D’Arce choke. An exciting battle from start to finish.
Welterweights Amir Sadollah and Jorge Lopez went to the clinch early, with Lopez gaining a takedown. Much of the time was spent with Lopez pushing Sadollah up against the cage. Sadollah did attempt a guillotine from this spot but was thwarted. Sadollah held the advantage on the feet, with more strikes thrown and landed. The final round saw another takedown from Lopez, but Sadollah defended most attempts well. A close fight, Sadollah took home the split decision.
Donald Cerrone utilized many effective leg kicks against Jeremy Stephens. He kept his opponent at bay with a superior reach and precision, landing a ton of various strikes. Stephens could never find a rhythm and lost a unanimous decision.
Yves Jabouin put on an impressive striking clinic versus Jeff Hougland, who absorbed countless shots but never stopped fighting. Jabouin nailed Hougland with a spinning back kick to the liver in the second, nearly finishing his opponent. The third round saw some vicious ground-and-pound from Jabouin, but again Hougland weathered the storm. In the end Jabouin won a unanimous decision but Hougland showed a ton of heart.
At Light Heavyweight, Igor Pokrajac fought Fabio Maldonado in an absolute war. The first round saw Pokrajac unable to take advantage of several potentially dominant positions. Pokrajac scored with several knees from the Thai clinch, while Maldonado peppered the body and head with relentless combinations throughout. The third round saw Pokrajac land a huge punch and keep moving forward despite the quickness and accuracy of Maldonado’s boxing. Ultimately Pokrajac won a great and memorable fight.
Middleweight Tom Lawlor knocked out Jason MacDonald with a vicious combination, landing a strong left down the pipe followed by a right hand behind the temple. Taking place on his 29th birthday, Lawlor was in need of a convincing victory after being submitted by Chris Weidman. MacDonald was out cold on the mat, leaving Tom Lawlor with a bonus.
While it may not have had a marquee name that casual fans instantly recognize, UFC on FuelTV 3 brought an excellent display of well-rounded MMA skills.
