UFC on Fuel TV 2 Prelims Recap: Head, Carmont win in Stockholm, Sweden

The preliminary card for UFC on Fuel TV from Stockholm, Sweden has come to a close, and was full of exciting bouts. James Head and Papy Abedi put on a back-and-forth show in the last preliminary bout.  Local favorite Abedi scored some success with top position, but he was ultimately rocked by Head and submitted with a rear-naked choke. While it was not the result the fans were looking for, it was a great fight to watch as the preliminaries in Sweden came to a close.

In other action, Francis Carmont fought a war against hometown favorite Magnus Cedenblad, who spent most of the opening round in dominating position. He had Carmont’s back and attempting many submissions to no avail. In the second round, Carmont came back and flattened his opponent out, finishing the fight with a rear-naked choke.

Cyrille “The Snake” Diabate defeated BJJ black belt Tom DeBlass via majority decision. It was a good win for Diabate, as he was always respected for his kickboxing skills yet had a highly suspect ground game. After training extensively on the ground game, he was able to escape a strong choke attempt by DeBlass and survive to win on the judges’ cards.

The exciting fights continued with two more submissions, as exciting Norwegian prospect Simeon Thoresen survived some vicious early elbows from Besam Yousef to lock up a rear-naked choke finish of his own. Excited about his win, Thoresen had the following to say:

“Fantastic. I am the first Norwegian that has ever won a UFC fight, so this is history for me and all of Norway. It was exciting to hear the crowd give me more and more motivation to win.”

Now having 15 out his 17 wins via submission, he should be a force in years to come. Also in a Lightweight bout, Reza Madadi def. Yoislandy Izquierdo with a second-round guillotine, continuing the theme of choke finishes on the preliminary card. Finally, Jason Young defeated Eric Wisely via decision in a Featherweight bout. Overall, it was a great beginning card to Sweden’s first-ever UFC that featured four submission victories.
