UFC Fight Night 91 Preliminary Card Results: Katlyn Chookagian Earns Decision Victory Over Lauren Murphy

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Wednesday, July 13th, 2016) will come in the form of UFC Fight Night 91 from the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Headlining the card are John Lineker and Michael McDonald, but there’s a full slate of fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Lauren Murphy (9-6) vs. Katlyn Chookagian (8-0) closed the UFC Fight Night 91 preliminary card on Fox Sports 1 in a women’s bantamweight bout. An okay fight that went the distance. In round 1, Chookagian was landing a lot of jabs early in the round and bruised up Murphy’s nose. Murphy clinched with her up against the fence. Chookagian separated from her, and Murphy started back peddling. In round 2, Murphy went for a takedown to begin the round and got it about a minute and thirty into the round. Murphy got full guard and rained down strikes. In round 3, both girls had a good striking exchange throughout the round. Chookagian clinched with her and landed some elbows. Murphy kept pressing forward but kept walking into jabs. Murphy went for a takedown, but it was stuffed. Chookagian won the fight by unanimous decision.

Eric Spicely (8-1) and Sam Alvey (27-8, 1NC) met int in a middleweight bout at UFC Fight Night 91. This one did not last long, and Alvey was definitely smiling after this one was over. Alvey stunned him to open the round with a right uppercut. Spicely went for a single leg takedown, but Alvey stuffed it. Alvey clinched with him up against the fence and landed some knees. Alvey locked in a standing guillotine choke for the win.

Cortney Casey (5-3) and Cristina Stanciu (5-2) met in in a women’s strawweight bout at UFC Fight Night 91. This one did not last long at all. Casey took her down right away to begin the first round and got full mount but Stanciu scrambled off back and stood up. Casey took her down again, got full mount and smashed her face in with elbows to win the fight.

Scott Holtzman (9-1) vs. Cody Pfister (12-6-1) opened the UFC Fight Night 91 Fox Sports 1 preliminary bouts in a lightweight bout. This was an okay fight. In round 1, Pfister came out fast and was looking for a knock out. Holtzman missed a flying knee and Pfister went for a takedown but couldn’t get it. Pfister tagged him before Holtzman backed up. Pfister clinched with him and put him on the fence. Holtzman landed some knees to the body. Holtzman scored a takedown but Pfister got right back to his feet. Pfister worked for a takedown but got stuffed. In round 2, Holtzman came out and took him down. Holtzman worked him over for almost the entire round on top in half guard with strikes and elbows. Holtzman got mount with a buck thirty left in the round. Pfister scrambled and got on top. In round 3, Holtzman once again came out and took him down in half guard. Holtzman blasted him with several elbows. Holtzman dominated the round. Holtzman won the fight by unanimous decision.

Rani Yahya (22-8, 1NC) vs. Matthew Lopez (8-1) in a bantamweight bout finished off the UFC Fight Night 91 Fight Pass preliminary card. A solid fight that took almost 3 rounds to get a finish. In round 1, Both guys came out and started swinging for the fences. Yahya was caught and hurt so he clinched with Lopez up against the fence. Lopez took him down and then let him up. Yahya was using his leg kicks well but Lopez continued to tag him. Yahya clinched and landed some big shots. Lopez took him down and locked in an armbar but Yahya got out of it. Yahya took him down and got half guard with 20-seconds left in the round. In round 2, Lopez clinched and took him down to begin the round. Lopez got on top in half guard and worked him over with strikes. Lopez beat him down for four minutes until Yahya got to his feet. Yahya shot in on a takedown and got it. In round 3, Lopez came out and took him down but couldn’t keep him there and Yahya got back to his feet. Yahya took him down and got side control and beat him up with elbows. Yahya got full guard but Lopez got to his feet but Yahya took him down and got his back. Lopez scrambled and got on top in half guard. Yahya scrambled and got half guard with about a minute to go. Yahya locked in an arm-triangle choke for the win.

Opening the UFC Fight Night 91 Fight Pass prelims was Devin Clark (6-1) vs. Alex Nicholson (7-2) in a middleweight bout. This one did not last long at all. Clark tagged him with an over the top right hand to begin the first round. Clark took him down inside one minute and got full guard. Clark moved to half guard and landed some elbows. Clark went for an arm/neck submission, but Nicholson scrambled and got to his feet. Nicholson clinched and landed some knees to the body. Clark was kneed in the nuts. Clark landed a big uppercut and Nicholson fell down. Clark got his back, but Nicholson stood up. Clark clinched and put him on the fence. Nicholson landed a spinning kick and then worked over the legs of Clark. Nicholson caught Clark with straight right hand and then finished him on the ground with just seconds left in the first round.
