UFC Fight Night 90 Preliminary Results: Alberto Mina TKO’s Mike Pyle

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Thursday, July 7th, 2016) will come in the form of UFC UFC Fight Night 90. Headlining the card are Rafael dos Anjos and Eddie Alvarez, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Mike Pyle (27-12-1) vs. Alberto Mina (13-0) in a welterweight bout closed the UFC Fight Night 90 preliminary card. A fun fight with a great finish. In round 1, A lot of movement in the early going. Mina got a early takedown and got into full guard. Moments later, they were stood up. Mina with a left hook that dropped Pyle and landed a series of strikes from the top. Mina got into full guard. Pyle kicked his way up to his feet but was taken down to end the round. In round 2, Mina dropped him with a flying knee and finished him off on the ground with strikes to win the fight.

John Makdessi (14-5) and Mehdi Baghdad (11-5) met in a lightweight bout. A fun fight that went the distance. In round 1, Baghdad with a good combo inside a minute into the round. They had some good exchanges but not a ton of action. Makdessi was pressing forward throughout the round. In round 2, Baghdad was hesitant in his striking and Makdessi was picking his shots. Makdessi landed a spinning back kick. Baghdad fell after throwing a head kick. In round 3, Baghdad came out blasting and landed a series of strikes. Makdessi landed a spinning back fist and then caught Baghdad with a series of strikes after Baghdad tripped into the fence. Makdessi took him down and ended the round in full guard on top. Makdessi earned the split decision victory.

Anthony Birchak (13-3) and Dileno Lopes (18-3) met in a bantamweight bout. A solid fight but not the best you will ever see. In round 1, Lopes comes out and clinches with him. He puts him on the cage and then takes him down. Birchak got right back to his feet and landed some elbows. Lopes went for a takedown, but Birchak countered and took him down. Lopes got to his feet and took Birchak down. Lopes got his back, and Birchak stood up. Lopes went for a neck crank but let it go. Birchak got him off his back midway through the round. Birchak with a trip takedown into half guard two minutes to go in the round. Birchak landed some good body shots and got his back. Lopes scrambled to his feet. Birchak landed a knee strike to the body and a hook. Lopes took him down and got his back. Birchak got him off. In round 2, Birchak clinches with him about a minute into the round and put him against the fence. Lopes pressed off, and Birchak started throwing wild kicks. Lopes with a good combo and then went for a takedown, but Birchak blocked it and put him up against the fence. Birchak landed some more knees while in the clinch. In round 3, Both guys were tired at this point. They had a wild exchange midway through the round. Birchak took home the split decision victory.

Pedro Munhoz (12-2, 1NC) and Russell Doane (14-6) met in a bantamweight bout. This one did not last long at all and it was exciting while it lasted. Both guys came out and started to have a wild exchange. Munhoz scored a takedown about two minutes into the round, but Doane got right back to his feet. Munhoz locked in a flying guillotine choke, and that’s a wrap.

Felipe Arantes (18-7-1, 2NC) and Jerrod Sanders (16-2, 1NC) met in a bantamweight bout. Talk about a comeback for Arantes. In round 1, Sanders took him down early in the round and got his back. He then got full front mount and rained down strikes. Arantes moved to full guard at the end of the round and went for a submission but couldn’t get it. Sanders ended the round on top. In round 2, Sanders came out and scored a quick takedown. Arantes from his back locked in an armbar for the win.

Gilbert Burns (11-1) and Lukasz Sajewski (13-2) met in a lightweight bout. This one did not last long at all. Burns came out and clinched with him. He worked him over with knees up against the fence. Burns caught him with a kick to the nuts. We go back to fighting with Sajewski missing a flying kick. Sajewski went for a single-leg takedown and got it but Burns got right back to his feet. Sajewski pressed him up against the fence. Burns took him down and got the armbar victory.

Marco Beltran (8-3) and Reginaldo Vieira (13-4) met in a bantamweight bout. In round 1, Beltran caught him with a knee to the body as Vieira shot in for a takedown. Vieira got a double leg takedown inside the first minute. Beltran scrambled to his feet moments later. Vieira scored another takedown, but Beltran got right back to his feet. Beltran landed a good left hand after taking a flying knee. Beltran clinched and landed a knee to the face. Vieira was back peddling and bleeding from the bridge of his nose. Vieira went for a takedown to end the round but did not get it. In round 2 and the final round, Vieira looked for a takedown and got a big slam just over a minute into the round. Vieira got full guard and worked him over with strikes. Vieira went for a kneebar but didn’t get it. Beltran worked him over with strikes and locked in the rear-naked choke for the win.

Vicente Luque (9-5-1) and Alvaro Herrera (9-4) met in a welterweight bout. In round 1, Herrera landed a good combo to open the round. Luque with a jab and then took him down with a single leg. Herrera got right back to his feet. Luque took him down midway through the round. Luque worked him over from half guard until Herrera got to his feet with under a minute to go. The fight ended in the second round. Luque worked for a takedown early and got a single leg inside a minute into the round. He got guard and worked him over with strikes. Luque got his back midway through the round and pressed him up against the fence as well as landing strikes. Herrera got to his feet but was taken down again with two minutes to go. Luque got his back and locked in the d’arce choke for the win.
