UFC Fight Night 58 Main Card Results: Machida Finishes Dollaway, Barao Submits Gagnon
Featuring a pivotal middleweight main event between recent title challenger Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida and rising contender C.B. Dollaway, tonight’s (Sat., December 20, 2014) UFC Fight Night 58 main card is in the books from Jose Correa Gymnasium in Barueri, Brazil.
Machida hurt Dollaway with a huge body kick early, swarming with a barrage of punches to earn the stoppage, leaving Dollaway out on the mat in just over one minute into the first round.
Former bantamweight champion Renan Barao looked to begin a new win streak against Mitch Gagnon in the co-main event. Barao snapped some early leg kicks, with Gagnon landing some solid combos. Barao found his timing with some big shots, but Gagnon clinched and landed a solid uppercut. Gagnon was surprisingly aggressive and effective, but he got nailed by a huge left hook that dropped him in an otherwise competitive first round.
Barao let his hands fly in the second, but Gagnon clinched until a restart. Barao got a short -lived takedown and landed another left hook, only to be clinched by Gagnon again. Barao landed a knee to close out the second. He snapped a head kick to begin the third, and Gagnon clinched again to coerce a chorus of boos from the crowd. Barao got a takedown, getting up to land some knees and drag it to the ground again. He got the mount and locked on a tight arm-triangle choke, forcing Gagnon to tap with just over a minute left in the bout.
With two consecutive wins after his UFC 170 loss to Daniel Cormier, light heavyweight Patrick Cummins met The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Brazil 3 winner Antonio Carlos Jr. Cummins got an early takedown, but Carlos Jr. went for repeated leglocks on the ground. But Cummins got out of danger to score with ground and pound and end the round on top. “Durkin” continued his grinding pace in the second round, once again fending off Carlos Jr.’s submission attempts. Cummins got a takedown to begin the final frame, smothering his outclassed opponent. The Brazilian got a surprising late suplex in the final minute, but Cummins survived to win a clear-cut unanimous decision.
Elias Silverio faced Rashid Magomedov at lightweight. Magomedov came out aggressive with some punishing kicks, but Silverio snapped a high kick of his own. The fighters traded shots, and Magomedov used his right hand to get the edge in a very close and technical first round. Silverio was more aggressive in the second, landing some solid shots before an eye poke halted the action. Magomedov continued his pinpoint striking display but ate a spinning kick as the round ended. Magomedov controlled the action in an otherwise slow third frame, dropping Silverio to earn a striking stoppage with only three seconds left, the latest finish in UFC lightweight history.
A once-touted welterweight prospect, Brazilian Erick Silva looked to get back on track against Mike “Biggie” Rhodes. Silva got top control early, passing to side control to lock on a tight arm-triangle choke to earn the tap early on in the first round.
Kicking off the main card, middleweight Daniel Sarafian battled Antonio dos Santos. Sarafian ate some big shots early, but countered with a big head kick before eating a huge right from dos Santos. Both fighters threw and landed wild shots, with Sarafian scoring with low kicks and hooks. The second round saw more of the same, but unfortunately dos Santos grossly dislocated his finger to earn a disappointing injury loss.
