UFC Fight Night 56 Main Card Results: Shogun Suffers First Round Knockout

Tonight’s (Sat., November 8, 2014) UFC Fight Night 56 main card is in the books from the Ginásio Municipal Tancredo Neves in Uberlândia, Brazil.

It turned out to be a tale of two cards, as last night’s UFC Fight Night 55 from Sydney, Australia, featured an alarming eleven stoppages while UFC Fight Night 56 wasn’t quite as exciting with four decisions on the main card.

The event aired live on FOX Sports 1 and featured light heavyweight headliner between No. 9-ranked former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and No. 10 Ovince St. Preux. The fighters came out trading kicks. Then Shogun was dropped a quick left hook and began eating a ton of punches to cause the referee to stop the fight.

The previously scheduled flyweight co-main event between Ian McCall and John Lineker was called off due to McCall suffering from a viral infection.

In its place stepped a welterweight bout between The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Brazil 3 middleweight winner Warlley Alves and promising knockout artist Alan Jouban. Alves came out incredibly aggressive, dropping Jouban with some big shots to go for a guillotine choke. Jouban fought back with some sharp strikes, rocking Alves with a body kick towards the end of the opening round.

Alves got a takedown to ride out the first half of the second round, but again Jouban countered with some solid combos. The third turned into a war, with Alves landing a huge right hand and an uppercut. Jouban turned it on with his boxing, stringing together effective striking combos. He appeared to have the bout won, but hometown fighter Alves won a questionable  unanimous decision.

Welterweight Leon Edwards made his debut against Claudio Silva. Both fighters exchange some big shots and ground control in the first. Silva appeared to get tired towards the end of the round, however, and Edwards capitalized by dropping Silva with some accurate punches. Silva recovered to get a takedown and attempt a rear naked choke to salvage the round somewhat. Silva got another takedown to start the third, getting to mount to land several punches. A late standup wasn’t enough for Edwards, and Silva edged out a split decision.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 19 finalist Dhiego Lima took on late replacement Jorge Oliveira as a fill-in main card bout. After getting rocked by a big shot, Lima secured a takedown and landed a big illegal knee as the first round came to a close. Lima attained the mount in the second to rain down with ground and pound. Oliveira survived a choke attempt to last until the third round, where Lima continued to dominate him with ground shots. Lima bounced back with a clear-cut unanimous decision.

Women’s strawweight Juliana Lima welcomed Nina Ansaroff to the UFC. Lima largely controlled the first two rounds with top control despite some submission attempts from Ansaroff. Lima appeared to tired a bit in the final frame, but held on to win a unanimous decision.
