Preliminary card (FOX Sports 2, 8 PM ET)

145lbs.:Diego Rivas def. Rodolfo Rubio by unanimous decision

TUF Latin America veterans up now, and these fiery featherweights look ready for war. The first round is back-and-forth, both men trading shots and ground positions. Rivas looking for the high kick in round two, looking fresh as he moves in and out. They go to ground, and it’s Rivas who ends up the round on top. 2-0 to “Pitbull” now.

Last round and the crowd is getting restless. One wonders why two non-Brazilian UFC débutantes are the feature preliminary bout….Rivas with a big knee off the clinch, they hit the mat and Rubio takes the back from a mount scramble, but Rivas reverses. The crowd is silent at this point, minus a few jeers, as this rather stale bout expires. 30-27 Rivas in my opinion, judges agree; UD Rivas

185lbs.:Caio Magalhaes def. Trevor Smith by knockout (knee and hammerfists)

“Hellboy” and “Hot Sauce” come out heated, and Magalhaes with a huge knee, and Smith is out. What is the referee doing? Many un-needed shots by Magalhaes, who scores a huge first round knockout. Hammerfists to the back of the head? Smith was clearly done anyway.

155lbs.:Leandro Silva def. Charlie Brenneman by submission (rear naked choke) round one

Brenneman looking a lot leaner at 155, working his wrestling well against “Buscape”. Brenneman wants no part of the striking of Silva, and is smothering with wrestling. Silva with the reversal, and he sinks in a rear naked choke. Wow! It’s over in round one as “Spaniard” taps out.

135lbs.:Thomas Almeida def. Tim Gorman by unanimous decision

Undefeated (17-0) Thomas Almeida  looked to live up to a lot of hype here, as the latest Chute Box signing to the UFC. Almeida displayed some brutal striking, but Gorman answered well with jabs. A flurry of knees and uppercuts ended out an exciting first round for the Brazilian. Almeida just unloads on Gorman in round two, and the American just has no answer.

Almeida’s diverse striking is too much for Gorman, but props to both guys for displaying solid chins. What a great fight, Almeida takes the decision.

170lbs.: Colby Covington def. Wagner Silva by submission (rear naked choke) round three

These welterweights came out swinging from the jump, but it was Covington that landed with more frequency, and also got the ground and clinch game working. Covington really grinding the Brazilian down with his wrestling-heavy style, and he sinks in a rear naked choke for the tap in round three.
