UFC Fight Night 50 went down this evening (September 5, 2014) live from the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The card looked great on paper and certainly delivered. The prelims had two finishes earned by New Yorker Al Iaquinta and former flyweight title challenger John Moraga. The main card saw four finishes and a few surprises. In the opening bout, UFC veteran Joe Lauzon took out former TUF Winner Michael Chiesa due to doctor stoppage. Next up was a heavyweight scrap between veteran Matt Mitrione and the surging Derrick Lewis. Mitrione rose to the occasion stopping Lewis by knockout in the first round. In the co-main event, heavyweights Alistair Overeem and “Big” Ben Rothwell collided. Despite being a heavy underdog, Rothwell shocked the fans by knocking out “The Reem” in round one. The main event featured a rematch between “Jacare” Souza and Gegard Mousasi, two of top middleweights who are closing in on a title shot. Unlike their first match-up, “Jacare” absolutely dominated Mousasi. He pushed an incredible pace and even tagged Mousasi on the feet, where Mousasi is the strongest. However, “Jacare” was able to drag Mousasi to the ground and use his patented jiu-jitsu to secure a third round submission.
