UFC Fight Night 103 Preliminary Card Results: Drakkar Close Decisions Devin Powell

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Sunday, January 15th, 2016) will come in the form of UFC Fight Night 103. Headlining the card are Yair Rodriguez and BJ Penn, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Devin Powell vs. Drakkar Klose in a lightweight bout closed the preliminary card on FOX Sports 1. In round 1, Klose rushed him in and landed a head kick then a good combo. Klose clinched with him and landed some big knee strikes. Powell fired back with his own body strikes. They separated halfway through the round. He dumps Powell and stands over him kicking his legs. Ref stands Powell up and he resumes circling around the outside to end the round. In round 2, Powell eats a big body knee and falls down. He gets back up and Klose clinches with him up against the fence. Klose lands good shots from inside and stunned him. Klose is really unloading on Powell with a lot of power shots but Powell has shown an incredible chin thus fair. Klose scored a takedown to end the round. In round 3, Powell is launched back every time Klose throws. Klose was the better fighter and mixed up his strikes nicely in this round. Powell was cut under his right eye. They exchanged for majority of the round. Klose picked up the unanimous decision win.

Augusto Mendes vs. Frankie Saenz is next in a bantamweight bout. In round 1, Saenz with a lot of movement early on and circling to his left. Mendes capitalized on it and took him down briefly but Saenz popped right back up. Saenz clinched, landed some knee strikes to the body and then separated. Mendes blitzed him with a series of shots and then clinched with him up against the fence. They exchanged to the fence. In round 2, Mendes clinched and took him down briefly about a minute and half into the round. Saenz got right back to his feet and dropped him with an elbow. Saenz got guard and worked him over with shots. They got back to their feet halfway through the round. After doing some boxing, Saenz clinched with him up against the fence with a minute to go. They quickly separated and exchanged to the bell. In round 3, they clinched for the majority of this round with Saenz being on the outside and landing knee strikes while Mendez was landing uppercuts. They separated with a minute to go. They exchanged to the bell. The judges gave the win to Mendez by split decision. 

Oleksiy Oliynyk vs. Viktor Pesta was next in a heavyweight bout. Pesta clinched with him early in the round. Pesta took him down about a minute and half into the round and got half guard. Ezekiel choke from the bottom from Oliynyk for the win.

Alex White vs. Tony Martin in a lightweight bout opened the preliminary card on FOX Sports 1. In round 1, Martin clinched with him to open the round. Martin’s cup broke and he had to change it on. That might be a first in MMA. Anyways, we’re back to action. They had a good exchange right after it. Martin scored a takedown and worked him over with strikes from half guard. Martin went for a kimura from side control but then let it go. In round 2, White buckles Martin’s legs with a right hand behind the ear. Martin scores a takedown halfway through the round. Martin worked him over with strikes from that position. White got to his feet late in the round and they clinched to end the round. In round 3, after exchanging for a bit, Martin clinched with him and pressed him up against the fence and landed some knee strikes. White went for a guillotine choke but let it go and landed a stiff right hand. They exchanged to the bell. The judges gave the win to Martin by unanimous decision. 

Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger vs. Nina Ansaroff in a women’s strawweight bout finished off the UFC Fight Pass preliminary card. In round 1, after they exchanged for the first two minutes, Ansaroff caught a kick and took her down. Ansaroff got guard and landed a series of strikes. Jones-Lybarger was landing her own shots off her back. This is how the first round ended. In round 2, Ansaroff took her down right out of the gate and got half guard. Ansaroff transitioned to her back and worked her over with strikes to allow for the opportunity for a rear-naked choke. However, she couldn’t lock it in and we’re going to the final round. In round 3, Ansaroff kept pressing forward and landing an overhand right. Ansaroff took her down halfway through the round and got her back and locked in a rear-naked choke and got it for the win.

Joachim Christensen vs. Bojan Mihajlovic was next in a lightweight bout. In round 1, Christensen opens up with a wild combo that caught Mihajlovic. They clinch and then separated. Mihajlovic slipped and Christensen got down and got in guard. Christensen worked him over with strikes from this position. They were stood up and clinched to end the round. In round 2, Christensen pressed forward and Mihajlovic clinched with him up against the fence to open the round. Christensen was hit low and this put a stop in the action. Action resumes shortly after that. Uppercut, front kick, and a couple of right hands land for Christensen late in the round. Mihajlovic clinches and landed some body strikes. In round 3, Christensen landed a huge uppercut while in the clinch and this one is a wrap.

Opening the UFC Fight Pass prelims was Cyril Asker vs. Dmitry Smoliakov in a heavyweight bout. After they had a feeling out process, Smoliakov poked Asker in the eye. We go back to action. Asker shot in for a takedown and Smoliakov landed an uppercut. Asker got the takedown and landed in side control. Smoliakov landed a series of strikes from the bottom. Asker got full mount and landed a series of strikes and the referee stopped the fight.
