UFC 220 Preliminary Card Results: Kyle Bochniak Decisions Brandon Davis

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Saturday, January 20th, 2018) will come from in the form of UFC 220. Headlining the card are Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Kyle Bochniak vs. Brandon Davis in a featherweight bout closes the preliminary card on FOX Sports 1.  In round 1, Bochniak on his bike early, using lots of lateral movement. Davis flinging kicks in his direction. Bochniak blitzes and then gets out of dodge. He steps in with another cross to the body. Davis kicks him. Bochniak lands a nice uppercut as Davis tries to sit down on a combo. Bochniak shoots and stuffs Davis into the cage before eventually ripping him down. Davis wall-walks right away but Bochniak is keeping him pressed to the cage. Bochniak nearly trips Davis down but can’t. But Davis no closer to escaping. Bochniak manages to pull him down now but Davis pops right up again. Bochniak nearly gets Davis once more, tries jumping on his back but gets shucked off. Davis is letting Bochniak control on him on the cage. In round 2, Bochniak blitzes in again, lands a right. Davis tries a kick. Bochniak steps in with a right. Davis starts attacking the legs. Davis closes distance on the circling Bochniak and lands a low leg kick. He’s trying to bait Bochniak into a brawl. Bochniak’s quickness is allowing him to land and then get away. The low leg kicks are affecting Bochniak. He charges forward to tie up and Davis nails him with a knee before fighting off the clinch. Davis misses a spinning backfist and Bochniak crashes him into the fence. Davis shucks him off. Bochniak nails Davis then bounces away. In round 3, Bochniak lands a 2-piece upstairs. Long front kick for Davis but Bochniak comes back with a 2 upstairs and a 3 to the body, then shoots. Bochniak pulls Davis down briefly, nearly gets reversed but pops up. Davis lands a leg kick. They trade rights. Davis counters a charging Bochniak with a reactive takedown but “Crash” pops right up. Really low output fight with Bochniak on his bike all fight. Davis slips and Bochniak tries to pounce with a takedown attempt but Davis gets his back to the cage, lets some elbows go. Nice counter rights for Davis to end the fight. The judges gave the win to Bochniak.

Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Sabah Homasi is next in a welterweight bout. In round 1, Hard leg kick for Alhassan. Homasi comes back with a body kick and a pair of hooks to the body. Another Alhassan leg kick. No brawl yet. Alhassan charges across the octagon behind punches but falls short. Homasi tries a flying knee then shoots. Homasi clips Alhassan, gives chase but Alhassan bombs right back. Homasi shoots and is able to complete a takedown. He’s clinging to Alhassan’s legs but getting nothing done. he ref stands them up. Alhassan connects on an overhand then lands an uppercut for the KO.

Dustin Ortiz vs. Alexandre Pantoja is next in a flyweight bout. In round 1, Long 1-2 scores after a leg kick for Pantoja. Ortiz ties up Pantoja and drags him to the mat but can’t secure position. Pantoja nearly takes the back now. Ortiz defending the RNC so far but he’s no closer to freeing himself. Pantoja gets his head off the cage and stretches Ortiz out more. In round 2, Ortiz slips a shot and steps in with a combination. Pantoja lands a leg kick but eats a right hand. Another Panjota leg kick. Ortiz looking much faster and he’s putting on a pace, throwing tons of punches and kicks. Pantoja responds with one hard shot at a time. Ortiz ties up, swings around to Pantoja’s back and rips him down. Pantoja wall-walks but Ortiz is stuck to his back, kneeing or trying to rip his hips out. In round 3, Pantoja lands a nice counter right. He pushes forward. Ortiz ducks under, lands a right hand, and shoots but Pantoja reverses it. Ortiz works his way to the cage with Pantoja clinging to him. Ortiz punching the body. As Pantoja threatened to get his back flat to the mat, Ortiz gave his back up. They’re seated at the base of the cage. Ortiz tries to turn in with the body triangle still on and he manages to shake Pantoja off the top. He’s in guard. Ortiz got the decision win.

Julio Arce vs. Dan Ige in a featherweight bout opens the FOX Sports 1 preliminary bouts. In round 1, Ige is backing Arce toward the cage. After a brief tie-up Arce lands a nice 1-2, answered by an Ige leg kick. Left for Arce, jumping knee to the body for Ige. Arce lands a nice right hook that wobbles Ige and forces him into a desperation shot. Arce stuffs it and pushes Ige back to the cage, unloading offense. In round 2, Arce playing the matador, sliding away from Ige’s pressure. Long front kicks and left hands landing for Arce. Ige coming back with leg and body kick and lunging rights. Not much action in the third round from either Brock or Gracie. Brock did do a nice job denying takedowns. Scorecards could be interesting, but Brock should take this. Arce steps in and throws a four-piece combo, Ige firing back with one. Ige has a shot stuffed. Arce pecking w/ his jab. They exchange flush crosses. Ige lands an overhand right. They tie up and Arce lands some nice dirty-boxing uppercuts. Ige shoots and nearly pulls Arce down on the cage, partially defended by a fence-grab. In round 3, Igle opens with a leg kick but eats a jab. Arce bounces away from an Igle overhand and comes back with a multi-punch combo, looking to thread it around his guard. Arce steps in with another combo, hits a hard uppercut, but eats a shot in return. Arce is piecing up Ige this round. Ige grabs the Thai plum and lands a knee but Arce returns fire to the body and drops Ige. He lets him up and easily stuffs a couple takedowns. Alice picked up the win.

Enrique Barzola vs. Matt Bessette in a featherweight bout finishes off the UFC Fight Pass preliminary card. In round 1, Hard leg kick for Barzola, again. Bessette hits a counter right as Barzola charges in with an overhand. Another Barzola leg kick. A Besstte head kick just misses and Barzola tries one. Bessette pressuring with long kicks but they’re glancing or falling short. No shot from Barzola yet. Left hand, body kick for Barzola. Bessette backs Barzola to the cage and hits a nice right hand. Left hook, body kick again for Barzola. Bessette snuck in a high kick. Barzola tries tying up as Bessette comes into the pocket but he’s shucked off. Now Barzola gets Bessette on the cage, picks him up, dumps him. Bessette threatening a leg lock game and forces Barzola off. Barzola is standing over him and lands some nice shots. Bessette pops up. In round 2, Bessette is trying to set up an uppercut, pushing Barzola back to the cage. Barzola keeps him at bay with front kicks but Bessette is looking for question mark kicks around his guard. Barzola doing a good job so far hiding his chin behind his shoulder in the pocket, but his hands are worryingly low. He picks Bessette up and dumps in center cage. Barzola shoots once more against the cage. He dumps Bessette once more before the bell. In round 3, Barzola opens with a leg kick but Bessette comes forward throwing hands viciously. He doesn’t connect on much. Body jab, kick for Bessette. Barzola tries tying up but Bessette shucks him off before he gets to the cage. Barzola leg kick then nice 2-3. Bessette left hook to body. A glancing left lands for Bessette, then they trade lefts. They are crashing into each other and shoving off after these combos. Barzola in on a shot on the cage. Barzola picked up the decision win.

Opening the UFC Fight Pass prelims is Islam Makhachev vs. Gleison Tibau in a lightweight bout. In round 1, Tibau sends a couple of right kicks toward Islam. Makhachev fires back by landing a sick overhand left hand to drop Tibau and finish the fight.
