UFC 214 Preliminary Results: Ricardo Lamas Finishes Jason Knight

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Saturday, July 29th, 2017) will come from in the form of UFC 214. Headlining the card are Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Jason Knight vs. Ricardo Lamas in a featherweight bout closes the preliminary card on FOX Sports 1. In round 1, Lamas shoots but Knight counters with a guillotine and Lamas has to bail on the initial shot. He finishes secondary shot and lands in side control. Knight’s guard is active. He forces Lamas to stand momentarily, but he jumps back into guard. Mission control for Knight. Lamas knees Knight’s butt, but his head is pinned to Knight’s chest. He escapes mission control. Knight tries a leg lock but Lamas got out of it. Lamas lands standing to ground strikes before Knight dives on a heel hook. Knight stands but Lamas is dropping bombs on him. Lamas gets tagged himself but he’s crushing Knight flush. Lamas drops and then finishes Knight with ground and pound.

Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling is next in a catchweight bout. In round 1, Barao extricates himself and gets on top. This is huge for him as he now doesn’t have to try to take down Sterling. Mild ground and pound. Sterling just looking to lock down position for the standup. Doesn’t want to give anything up to get to his feet. Barao got out of it and into full guard on top. Half guard now for Barao. Knees to the body, then Sterling reclaims guard. Barao landing good ground and pound then has to fend off the triangle-armbar chain.  In round 2, Aljo is a very impressive grappler to maintain this control on this level of grappler, landing hard ground and pound. Barao is able to get his back to the mat and reclaim guard but Sterling feeds him elbows. Barao tries triangle but it’s not close. Sterling putting the body triangle on, throwing ground and pound. Doing well with control so far, but Barao working hard to escape. In round 3, Sterling stunned him with a straight kick to the face then picked him apart with some strikes. Sterling worked for a takedown with Barao with his back up against the fence. At this point, Barao was looking tired. The final round comes to an uneventful close. The judges gave the win to Sterling by decision.

Renato Moicano vs. Brian Ortega is next in a featherweight bout. In round 1, a nice right hand from Ortega and he’s got Moicano stung early. There was an eye poke from Ortega. Moicano with a couple ugly hooks, Ortega counters looks for a late flying knee. In round 2, Moicano is slinging those hooks, and his head is online as he does. But Ortega isn’t making him pay. Moicano teeing off on Ortega a little bit. But Ortega lands blistering right that seems to stagger Moicano, but Brazilian fires back. In round 3, Moicano hits the takedown straight into the guillotine and taps out. Ortega picks up the win.

Andre Fili vs. Calvin Kattar in a featherweight bout opens the FOX Sports 1 preliminary bouts. In round 1, there was feeling out process for basically the whole round. Not a ton of action. Kattar with a right to the body. Fili doing well to be elusive though. Fili with a nice 1-2 as Kattar backed himself into the cage. Fili with a takedown attempt, but Kattar stuffs it and both guys land in the pocket. Kattar with the takedown to end the round and hard ground and pound. In round 2, Kattar leg kicks as Fili tries to walk him down. Fili grabs the Thai clinch and hits a knee but then eats a flush right hand. Fili body kick answered by flush Kattar left hook. Kattar feeding Fili straight punches and leg kicks. They trade flush shots. In round 3, Kattar countering Fili’s wide punches with his own straight shots. Fili’s movement not helping him outsmart Kattar. Kattar closes the distance and Fili gets off a long combo as Kattar covers up. Fili has a kick caught and gets dumped at the base of the cage. Kattar lets him up. Fili lands a punch-kick combo to end the fight. The judges gave the win to Kattar by decision.

Alexandra Albu vs. Kailin Curran in a women’s strawweight bout finishes off the UFC Fight Pass preliminary card. In round 1, They start fast. Albu catches a kick and backs Curran to the cage while eating punches. They clinched then separated. Albu pulled guard with Curran falling in top position. Albu nearly had her back taken but gets her back to the mat and reclaims guard. Curran is raining down punches/elbows. Albu walk walks to her feet and boxes up Curran. They tie up and Albu powers Curran to the mat. She stands and Curran able to get up. Albu just hulks Curran to the mat and lands a huge elbow, then gets swept. She lands several hard shots, Curran up to end the round. Crazy yet fun first round. In round 2, Curran leg kick answered by Albu right. Curran throwing but coming up short. Albu’s pace has slowed. Curran pressuring. Albu hits a couple shots and a front kick, eats a hard right. Albu comes forward with hard punches. Albu throws her down to the ground again. Curran works up and starts pounding on Albu on the fence but she gets tossed again. Nice ground and pound from Albu but she eats illegal up kick.  In round 3, Curran with a jab to start the round while doing well early to slip and punch and stay active. Curran lands a head kick that made Albu hurt. Curran gets a takedown and is working from half guard. Curran with a sharp jab. Nice right hand. Albu eating it all and coming right back with her own punches. Curran went for the body lock. Albu went for the throw again and this time it failed. Curran on top. Albu fights her way out of the choke. She’s nearly able to push Curran away and get up but Curran shoves her back down. The judges gave the win to Ablu by decision.

Jarred Brooks vs. Eric Shelton is next in a flyweight bout. In round 1, Brooks gets Shelton down with a double. Shelton is on his seat at the base of the fence while elbowing Brooks’ head and punching the body. Shelton works his way up but Brooks drops and pulls Shelton back down. Brooks threatens with front headlock as Shelton tries to stand up. Brooks doing well to keep on the headlock. Working knees and jumps on the guillotine but time expires. In round 2, Shelton gets his own key takedown with a minute left in the round. Brooks countering with a guillotine, then kicks Shelton up and over. Brooks hits his own brief takedown at the very end of the round. In round 3, Brooks feinted into the pocket and got caught hard by Shelton. Legs went out for a second. Brooks pops right back and doesn’t let Shelton follow up with anything. Brooks on his bike again. They trade body kicks and punches. Shelton with a flying knee late then jumped on a guillotine attempt but the bell sounded. The judges gave the win to Brooks by split decision.

Opening the UFC Fight Pass prelims is Josh Burkman vs. Drew Dober in a lightweight bout. In round 1, Dober opens with leg kicks from his southpaw stance. Burkman shoots but gets stuffed. Dober clinches, pushes Burkman into the fence. Dober follows a right hook into a shot but Burkman stuffs it and connects on the break. Dober fires back. A left cross drops Burkman.
