UFC 207 Preliminary Card Results: Neil Magny Picks Up Decision Win Over Johny Hendricks

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Friday, December 30th, 2016) will come in the form of UFC 207. Headlining the card are Ronda Rousey and Amanda Nunes, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Johny Hendricks vs. Neil Magny in welterweight bout closed the preliminary card on FOX Sports 1. In round 1, Magny comes out aggressive. Hendricks pressured him with a series of combos up against the fence. Hendricks was landing leg kicks repeatedly. Hendricks took him down with under three minutes to go and worked him over with strikes from this position. Magny kept trying to go for a triangle and an armbar but Hendricks wss having none of it. In round 2, Hendricks took him down to begin the round and got half guard. Magny tried to get up throughout the round but just couldn’t. Hendricks stayed on him and continued to work him over with strikes as well as elbows. In round 3, Magny came out strong and landed some knees but Hendricks clinched with him to slow him down. Hendricks was tired in this round and it affected his performance. Hendricks clinched and took him down near the end of the round. Magny has a tight triangle locked in, but time expires. Magny picked up the decision win.

Antonio Carlos Junior and Marvin Vettori met in a middleweight bout. In round 1, Junior poked him in the left eye right out of the gate. We get back to action and Vettori poked him in the eye. An eye for an eye. Junior with a kick then worked for a takedown but Vettori defended it. Great defense. Junior continued to work for it and got it with under a minute to go but Vettori got right back up to his feet. In round 2, they exchange on the feet for the majority of the round. Vettori took him down with under two minutes to go and landed a series of strikes. Vettori went for a guillotine choke but let it go. Vettori finished the round kicking Junior’s legs on the ground.  In round 3, Junior comes out and clinches with him for most of the round. With two minutes to go, Vettori escaped and they went back to striking. Junior took him down late in the round, landed some strikes and we go to the distance. The judges gave the win to Junior by UD.

Alex Garcia and Mike Pyle met in a welterweight bout. Garcia caught him with a big body kick then took him down and got guard. Pyle scrambled to his feet with under three minutes to go. Garcia lands a huge right hand and Pyle went to sleep. This one is over.

Niko Price vs. Brandon Thatch in a welterweight bout opened the FOX Sports 1 preliminary bouts. Thatch threw a lot of leg kicks early in the round. Price clinched with him while landing some knees that ultimately set up the takedown and is in half guard. Price locked in the arm triangle and got the submission win. This was Price’s UFC debut.

Opening the UFC Fight Pass prelims was Tim Means vs. Alex Oliveira in a welterweight bout. Means opening up the first round with leg kicks and lands some nice strikes in a brief exchange in the pocket. Means with great takedown defense and reverses it to end up on top in half guard. Oliveira with a nice counter strike that set up a spinning body kick dropped Means. However, Means got back to his feet and clinches with him up against the fence. Oliveira was bleeding from his nose and took him down with under three minutes to go. Means scrambled, got to his feet and took Oliveira down with under two minutes to go. Means got guard and worked him with strikes. Oliveira got up and Means landed some knees that are technically illegal because Oliveira was down. January 1st that would be legal. Doctors check on Oliveira. On the replay, it shows that it was actually a legal shot. Marc Ratner is saying that the knee was indeed legal, due to Oliveira only having one knee down and no hands on the mat. It was announced that its a no contest.

Welterweight bout: Niko Price def. Brandon Thatch by submission (arm-triangle choke) at 4:30 of Round 1
