UFC 203 Preliminary Results: Bethe Correia Edges Out Jessica Eye

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Saturday, September 10th, 2016) will come in the form of UFC 203. Headlining the card are Alistair Overeem and Stipe Miocic, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Jessica Eye (11-5, 1NC) vs. Bethe Correia (9-2) in a women’s bantamweight bout closed the UFC 203 preliminary card on Fox Sports 1. A very close fight. In round 1, Correia was keeping her range and picking her spots early on. Eye clinched and then separated. They exchanged to the bell. In round 2, they kept the fight on the feet, but there was not a ton of action. Both fighters were bleeding from their temples. In round 3, this was a very close fight that stayed on the feet, and both fighters had their moments. Correia clinched with 30-seconds to go in the round. They stayed that way to end the round. Correia won the fight by split decision.

Brad Tavares (13-4) and Caio Magalhaes (9-2) met in a middleweight bout at UFC 203. An okay fight that went the distance. In round 1, Magalhaes comes out quick and lands a leg kick. Tavares was keeping his range and trying to pick his spots. Magalhaes went for a single leg midway through the round and got it. Tavares popped right back to his feet, and Magalhaes clinched with him up against the fence. Magalhaes was trying to get the fight down to the ground but just couldn’t. In round 2, they stayed in the clinch for the majority of this round, and there was not a ton of action. In round 3, Magalhaes clinched with him and then dropped down and went for a guillotine midway through the round. Tavares got out of it, stood up and then clinched with Magalhaes once again. They separated with just little over two minutes to go in the round. Magalhaes came on strong in this round and was landing leg kicks. They exchanged to end the round. Tavares picked up the split decision victory.

Nik Lentz (26-7-2, 1NC) and Michael McBride (8-1) met in a lightweight bout at UFC 203. This was a one-sided beatdown by Lentz. In round 1, after they exchanged hands early on, Lentz took him down and just put a beatdown on McBride. In round 2, they come out and have a wild exchange. Lentz took him down, but McBride scrambled and got his back. Lentz shrugged him off, and McBride went into guard in top position. Lentz got on top moments in later in half guard. Lentz got his back and went for a rear-naked choke midway through the round, but McBride got out of it. Lentz stayed on him and landed a series of strikes to finish the fight.

Drew Dober (17-7, 1NC) vs. Jason Gonzalez (10-3) in a lightweight bout opened the Fox Sports 1 preliminary bouts. This one did not last long at all. Dober swarms with him strikes and Gonzalez falls back towards the cage. Dober finished him on the ground with strikes.

Opening the UFC 203 Fight Pass prelims was Yancy Medeiros (13-4, 1NC) vs. Sean Spencer (12-6) in a welterweight bout. This one landed with a thud. In round 1, both guys were conservative and had a feeling out process in the early going. Spencer was mixing up his kicks as well. Spencer had success ducking in and finding the overhand right. They close in, and Spencer tagged him. Spencer slipped, and Medeiros landed some jabs. Medeiros told him to bring it on as his held up his hands. They were trashing talking towards the end of the round. In round 2, Medeiros landed a head kick that dropped Spencer early in the round then swarmed him on the ground with strikes. Medeiros got his back and locked in the rear-naked choke for the win.
