UFC 198 Preliminary Results: Demian Maia Chokes Out Matt Brown

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Saturday, May 9th, 2016) will come in the form of UFC 198. Headlining the card are Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Demian Maia vs. Matt Brown closed the preliminary card on Fox Sports 1 in a welterweight bout. The story of the fight? Maia will smother you on the ground. In the first round, Brown tried to do some stick and move, but Maia took him down right away with a double leg. Maia took his back, and Brown stood up against the fence. It was the same story in the second round. Maia was just smothering him and controlled him. In the third round, Brown comes out and is looking for a big strike. Maia tried to take him down but kept getting stuffed. Brown tagged him, and Maia grabbed his left leg and put him on the fence. Maia then got his back and locked in the rear-naked choke for the win.

Thiago Santos (12-3) and Nate Marquardt (34-15-2) met in a middleweight bout at UFC 198. Nice and quick. Santos did it again. Marquardt comes out quick and was using a lot of leg kicks. Santos dropped him and Santos swarmed him. However, Marquardt recovered and got back to his feet. Moments later, Santos tagged him with a series of strikes and Marquardt fell and this one is over.

Francisco Trinaldo (19-5) and Yancy Medeiros (14-3) met in a lightweight bout at UFC 198. Such a fun fight to say the least. In the first round, Trinaldo came out and clinched with him up against the fence. They had a wild exchange to end the round. They continued to put on a striking clinic in the second round. In the third round, Trinaldo comes out and stalks him. Medeiros was bleeding from under his right eye. Trinaldo then rocked him with several big strikes that had Medeiros back peddling. Medeiros showed heart and stayed in the fight. He took Trinaldo down late in the round and landed some big strikes. Medeiros earned the decision victory.

John Lineker (27-7) vs. Rob Font (12-2) opened the Fox Sports 1 preliminary card in a bantamweight bout at UFC 198. A one-sided fight to say the least. In the first round, Lineker was working the body and using a lot of jabs. Font with a lot of movement. Linker took him down and worked him over with strikes. In the second round, Lineker continues to stalk him and landing some good body strikes. Font was throwing strikes but couldn’t get things going. Lineker went for a takedown but couldn’t get it and they went back to striking. In the third round, Font went for it in this round but kept walking straight into Lineker’s strikes. Lineker stunned him and got him down to the ground and landed some big strikes up against the fence. Linker won the fight by decision.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Patrick Cummins in a light heavyweight bout finished off the UFC 198 UFC Fight Pass preliminary card. This one did not last long. Nogueira comes out and blitzes him. Nogueira with a big left hand that hurt him. Moments and several strikes later, the fight was stopped. 

Sergio Moraes (10-2) and Luan Chagas (14-1) met in a welterweight bout at UFC 198. In the first round, Chagas dropped him twice in this round (head kick and straight right hand). In the second round, Chagas was blitzing him when he striked. Moraes was mixing up his body strikes with his head strikes. Moraes tagged him with a head kick. Moraes went for a jumping guillotine but couldn’t get it locked in and Chagas ended up on top. In the third round, Moraes took him down and landed some big strikes. Chagas got his back and worked him over with strikes. The judges scored the fight a split draw.

Opening the UFC 198 UFC Fight Pass prelims was Renato Moicano (10-0-1) vs. Zubaira Tukhugov (19-3) in a featherweight bout. In round one, Tukhugov comes out with his hands low and was throwing big shots. Moicano stayed calm and was picking his shots and throwing a lot of leg kicks. Late in the round, Tukhugov pushed him down and got guard in top position. Moicano would later scramble to his feet. A very close fight in the second round. Moicano came out strong and was throwing some big shots. Tukhugov claimed he was hit low, but nothing happened. In the middle of the round, Tukhugov shot in for a single-leg, but it was stuffed. In the third round, Tukhugov picked up the pace despite being cut. After three rounds, the judges gave Moicano the decision win.
