UFC 182 is finally here, no more talk, at least until after the fighting is done. We all know why we’re here, we want to see Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier fight. This is one of the biggest rivalries in the sport’s history, and it all comes to a head tonight (Saturday January 3rd, 2015).
Team Alpha Male product Danny Castillo returned and faced Paul Felder in a lightweight affair. “The Irish Dragon” looked patient for just his second UFC fight, “Last Call” moved well on his toes. The Alpha Male veteran seemed to be having troubles with the Irish-Philly native early on, as Felder mixed up his striking well. Round one went to Felder without doubt.
Castillo was starting to look like a broken man in round two, and started to eat some heavy knees against the cage. A huge spinning back fist, and Castillo is stiff and out cold. Wow! What a huge upset knock out win.
The bantamweight showdown between Marcus Brimage and Cody Garbrandt saw a tentative start from both men, with plenty of movement. A low blow from Brimage, they continue, but Garbrandt keeps firing. The Team Alpha Male product lands fast hooks on Brimage, and is starting to unload, but it’s another low blow. Garbrandt rounds out round one with a massive flurry of punches.
Round two opens like a crazy bar fight, with Brimage now landing some good shots on the feet. “Bama Beast” showed he has some get back, but probably still loses round two. Round three was close too, with Brimage actually landing some clean left hands and some good trip kicks. Brimage gets sloppy in the last 10 seconds, gets dropped by a left hook, he gets up and is stopped on the second knockdown. What a heart breaker. Garbrandt by TKO in three.
Heavyweights Shawn Jordan and Jared Cannonier fought next, and it was Jordan with the big finish. “The Savage” rocked Cannonier with a right hook deep in round one, and his debuting opponent went out cold. KO for Jordan.
Evan Dunham fought against Rodrigo Damm to open the FOX Sports 1 prelims next, and it started as a pure stand up fight. Dunham with some good technical boxing, and Damm looking to land the hooks. Great first round from Dunham, and a dominant performance in the second. Better from Damm in the last round but it was too late. Unanimous decision for Dunham.
On to the welterweight battle between Omari Akhmedov and Mats Nilsson and these guys come out firing. The Sambo specialist rocks Nilsson with ground and pound after an early takedown, but seemed to gas himself out a little. Nilsson started to land well in round two, but the takedown was there for Akhmedov. Slower pace from both guys in round three, Nilsson almost finishes with a d’arce choke. Akhmedov by UD.
Opening the card is a women’s bantamweight showdown featuring Alexis Dufresne and Marion Reneau. “Sneaky Zebra” never really showed up in the opening exchanges, getting clocked clean by her smaller opponent. Reneau started tagging Dufresne with the right hands, and it got pretty ugly. This fight should have been stopped long before, terrible refereeing. UD for Reneau.
