Toney and Couture having a weight problems
Yahoo sports reports that James Toney, and Randy Couture are having a dispute as far as what weight they will be fighting on at UFC 118 in Boston on Aug 28.
Last Saturday James Toney told MMAjunkie That the pro boxer vs MMA will be a “catch weight affair.”
This was countered today by Couture team saying that they have heard no such thing claiming that this fight will be at heavyweight. It was said during the initial negotiations for this fight. The two would meet at a catch weight of 215 pounds. Apparently the idea was scrapped.
Toney was quoted saying when he spoke to mmajunkie, “They want to make it easy for Randy,” Toney said. “They’re trying to please him. Whatever they want to do, we can do it.”
Comments coming from Randy’s teams where that, “The Toney camp couldn’t agree to a catch weight, and there’s been no discussion about it thereafter,” Randy’s teams also said today. “I suggest James Toney stop playing with dolls and focus on the fight.”
Toney also said “I could fight at 205, but why should I?”. “Me not being effective against Brock Lesnar? That’s crazy. I fought Sam Peter. Sam Peter is bigger than he is. I fought Hasim Rahman. He’s bigger than him. I fought John Ruiz. He’s bigger than him.
“Everybody I fought the last eight or nine years is bigger than me. They outweighed me, and I never had a problem with it.”
Randy Couture now 47 has an MMA record of 18-10 with his last wins coming at UFC 105, and UFC 109 over Mark Coleman, and Brandon Vera. James Toney 41 will make is MMA debut. It is worth noting the Toney debuted in boxing at 160 pounds, he has fought as heavy as 237 pounds. Toney holds a boxing record of 72-6-3
