Stipe Miocic Targets Certain Date For Daniel Cormier Rematch
Stipe Miocic targets a certain date in order to get a rematch against UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. After months of calling for this to happen, the former UFC heavyweight champion still believes in his mind that it will happen.
Cormier scored a KO win over Miocic to win the UFC heavyweight title in the main event of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event. This fight took place in July at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, which marked history as Cormier was a two-division champion. DC has since relinquished the UFC light heavyweight title.
While many think that Miocic should accept another fight in order to jump start his career, the former champion disagrees. In his mind, there’s no other fight that makes sense for DC to take in the division.
“If you look at it, there’s no other match to make in the heavyweight division besides me and him,” Miocic said on Ariel Helwani’s ESPN MMA Show. “He said that if ‘Brock isn’t able to fight in April, then I’ll fight Stipe’. And Brock’s doing WrestleMania in April, and is he even cleared by USADA?
“I’m definitely gonna get (the title shot),” he continued (H/T to Bloody Elbow). “One minute he says yes, the next minute he says no, then he tells me I should get a fight before him. If he does fight Brock – who hasn’t fought in almost three years, hasn’t fought anyone, he’s been popped twice – I don’t understand it. He should get a fight before he fights D.C. I don’t know.”
Miocic even has a date in mind which is the UFC 236 pay-per-view event that goes down on April 13. As of this writing, the only fight that’s been announced is the interim middleweight title showdown between Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum.
“He got me in the first round. If for anything, it wasn’t like he was beating the brakes off me or anything like that,” he said. “I felt like I was winning that fight then I was caught with the punch, and if he’s that confident, do it again.
“Let’s do it April 13th. There’s a headliner, or a spot, let’s do it.”
