Sleeper Card Alert: Armageddon Fighting Championships 3: Evolution on Saturday Night

(Armageddon is fitting name for the promotion, since Kalib Starnes fighting for a title likely signals that the world is coming to an end.)

If you’re jonesing for some MMA to watch this weekend since July is pretty dry for events, and you don’t want to shell out the $29.95 for the Austrailian Impact FC “Island of Misfit Toys” pay-per-view, for the price of a small pizza you can watch a pretty decent card from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on Saturday night.

Armageddon 3 will feature a middleweight title bout between Nick Hinchliffe and UFC 100-yard dash record holder Kalib Starnes (who, incidentally, gave me the excuse linked here after the day after the bout with Quarry, and later, when he was criticized for his comments, tried to excuse the excuse by wrongfully blasting me on the Sherdog forums for printing comments he says he made “off the record” even though he didn’t bother to mention that they were).

All joking aside, besides his bizarre UFC 83 non-fight with Nate Quarry, Starnes has always put on decent fights and Hinchliffe is no joke himself. Four of the former King of the Cage Canadian light heavyweight champion’s five losses were against PRIDE and UFC veterans including Victor Valimaki, Rory MacDonald and Travis Galbraith.

Also on the card is grappling phenom Robert Drysdale, who will be making his heavily-anticipated MMA debut against  8-2-1 Canadian Bas Huveneers, who is riding a six-fight winning streak into the bout.

BC-based Brazilian-transplant, Marcus Vinicios — the brother of the fighter in the infamous crazy capoeira knockout video — who takes on Ryan James, could very well be the standout fighter of the night.

Another highly regarded grappler who is somewhat new to the MMA game and will be fighting on the card is Canadian Misha Cirkunov, who will be looking to rebound from his recent loss to Cesar Gracie fighter Roy Boughton. Cirkunov won the Canadian ADCC trials a few years back and held his own in an exhibition grappling match with Renato “Babalu” Sobral barely out of high school.
