Robbie Lawler: I Feel Like I Deserve Another Shot At The Title

Back in March, Robbie Lawler came up short in his pursuit of a UFC title losing a unanimous decision to the divisions current champion; Johny Hendricks.

On Saturday night “Ruthless” has the chance to get back to winning ways as he is set to take on “The Juggernaut” Jake Ellenberger who makes his return after a near 10-month layoff. In a recent interview with Bleacher Report, Lawler said although he has previously trained with his opponent he actually isn’t too familiar with him:

“I’m familiar with him a little bit but not too much,” he said. “I trained with him one day a long time ago. I know he used to fight for the IFL when that was around and has done pretty well in the UFC. But I really don’t think too much about that stuff.

I’m more focused on myself and getting myself ready and my coaches more or less worry about Ellenberger. They put me in those situations in practice and make sure I’ll be ready for the fight.”

A loss to Ellenberger would send the 32-year old right back down the welterweight ladder and waste all the hard work he put in to make it to the top of the UFC. After coming so close to getting the title at UFC 171, Lawler believes he deserves another shot at the title.

“Another shot at the title would be awesome. I feel like I deserve it. I feel like the fight was close and I did a lot of damage, but when it comes down to it, I need to get ready for Jake Ellenberger. He’s a helluva fighter, and I need to be ready for him.”

He certainly will need to be ready for Ellenberger who has picked up eight wins in his last ten fights in the UFC. However, that doesn’t faze Lawler who says he is just going to go out and fight his best, hopefully, that’s enough to get him back into the title picture; which is what he wants most.

“The title is one of my goals,” Lawler said. “I want to go out there and fight my best, and the ultimate goal is to actually go out there and fight to my full potential. Winning the title in the UFC would just solidify it, but really performing at my absolute best is the thing I’m striving for.”
