Robbie Lawler Signs New Multi-Year Deal With Adidas
UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler truly had an awesome 2014. After losing in a close decision to Johny Hendricks for the vacated strap at UFC 171, “Ruthless” looked like a killer in his next two against Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown. The subsequent rematch with “Bigg Rigg” at UFC 181 was vintage Lawler, as he snatched the belt and laid the way for a future trilogy-maker.
We learned today, courtesy of The MMA Hour, that Lawler has signed a brand new multi-year deal with sports apparel giant Adidas. He was already sponsored by them, but they scratched his old contract once he won the belt, and offered a far more “lucrative” deal. Check out what the boss at 170 pounds had to say:
“I’m happy to be with Adidas, it’s awesome. It’s going to be a two year deal, and it’s going to be awesome. I had no idea when I started this sport that I’d be getting sponsored by one of the biggest companies in the world of shoes and apparel. It’s just for outside of the cage, Reebok has a deal for the UFC uniforms, although Adidas owns Reebok.”
As far as when we’d see Lawler in action again, he claimed he could’ve possibly fought earlier in the year, but felt like he may have burnt himself out had he took a fight so early in 2015:
“The UFC asked me if I could fight (earlier this year) but my coaches weren’t happy, I’d fought like four times in nine months , it was too much. I’m good now, and I’m ready whenever the UFC needs me. ”
Contenders at welterweight right now are a little tied up, all apart from Rory MacDonald. UFC president Dana White shot down Benson Henderson’s recent call out of the “Red King”, claiming the Canadian was “already booked” elsewhere. Again, Lawler was not giving anything away:
“He is one of the top guys, but I’ll be ready for whoever they put in front of me. Johny or Rory, I’m ready for whoever. I’m aiming for a return in July, but I’m hoping that I’ll find out in the next two weeks.”
So stay tuned for news of Robbie Lawler’s next fight, and expect that he’ll probably be fighting a Canadian Psycho mid-summer. As an old school fan favorite, “Ruthless” is rather unique. There aren’t many guys that can fight on for as long as the ATT (American Top Team) product has, let alone win a UFC championship.
