Report: Police Investigating Jorge Masvidal-Leon Edwards Brawl

Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal has sparked a riot in the mixed martial arts community. After picking up a monstrous knockout win over Darren Till in the UFC London main event (highlights here), “Gamebred” kept that momentum rolling by boxing Leon Edwards in a backstage brawl during a post-fight interview.

Word soon came that Masvidal actually cut Edwards with one of his strikes. Both fighters were required to leave the arena. They did no further media obligations due to the post-fight altercation. That was troubling considering both men had arguably picked up the biggest victories of their respective careers. Edwards beat Gunnar Nelson by split decision in the co-main event at UFC London.

It’s too early to know what will happen in terms of potential fines and/or suspensions to both. However, the brawl is already bringing some consequences of a different kind.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported that British police are at the fighter hotel in London investigating the backstage mess:

The confrontation was certainly an out-of-the-blue one that escalated instantly. It was a shocking development that went down only mere moments after Masvidal shocked hometown fan favorite Till with a vicious KO strike.

“Gamebred” has a reputation for being a hard-nosed street fighter. He may be in some hot water with the local police in London for this public dust-up, however. We’ll keep you posted.

*UPDATE*

Ariel Helwani reported that Edwards has decided not to press charges:

His management released a statement:

“Leon is fine. We will cooperate with the UFC as they investigate the matter.”
