The age old issue of team mates or friends fighting raises it’s head once again, this time being snubbed out by UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao. The Brazilian Nova Uniao product flatly states that a scrap with amigo Jose Aldo is not ever going to happen, so we might as well forget about that being the next superfight.

As well as not fighting against ‘Scarface’, Barao discusses his UFC 173 opponent T.J. Dillashaw with Bleacher Report:

“Me and Aldo are like brothers, and (a superfight) is not gonna happen…I’m happy just doing my job and my best. Maybe in the future Dana will call me No. 1,” he said. “For me, definitely Jose Aldo [is the best fighter in the world]. He’s the most complete fighter, and I train with him every day. I think he’s the best.”

Having suitably shot down any hopes of a future fight with his featherweight stable mate, the bantamweight boss went on to discuss recent comments by T.J. Dillashaw. ‘The Viper’ has stated on his plans to upset the champion and shock the world. Barao responds:

“Everyone thinks in a certain way. TJ can speak whatever he wants,”Barao said. “He’s been speaking a lot lately about that. I’m just waiting for the day of the fight, and then I’ll enter the Octagon and prove TJ wrong. Yes [Assuncao would have been a tougher matchup],” Barao said. “He was the guy who fight )TJ). He earned the right to have a title shot [by winning] five or six straight fights in the division, but he hurt himself and the opportunity was given to Dillashaw.”

As much of a trash-talker’s game that MMA has become, it is refreshing to see a humble and down to earth champion like Barao. He is one of the brightest stars in MMA today, but you’d think he was your average blue collar worker from his tone. Nice guys don’t always finish last it seems. In summary, Barao gives a description of his work ethic as champ:

“I just keep working hard, practicing a lot, practice a little bit of everything, just be prepared for everything. That’s the way I always try to see things.”

There you have it kids; keep working and good things will come…..maybe not a 33 fight win streak, but something like that. We’ll see if his work has paid off this Saturday, at UFC 173, but stay with LowKick in the meantime for more pre-fight coverage.
