Rashid Magomedov Ends Gilbert Burns’ Unbeaten Streak In Sao Paulo

In a battle of two rising lightweight bruisers, Gilbert Burns (10-1) and Rashid Magomedov (19-1) took to the Octagon for the second fight on the UFC Fight Night 77 card in Sao Paulo, Brazil. While Burns planned on staying unbeaten, Magomedov looked to extend his winning streak to 12.

Score another one for “Highlander.”

Magomedov landed a right hand early. The 29-year-old Burns quickly took “Highlander” down. “Durinho” secured a whizzer position and his opponent wound up on his back again. Burns snuck in a jab with over two minutes to go in the opening frame. Magomedov began throwing more kicks to the body and Burns had trouble finding his way inside. Burns landed a body kick that “Highlander” tried to catch and the round concluded seconds later.

“Durinho” immediately looked for a high kick. Burns went for a takedown, but Magomedov’s balance prevented it from being completed. Burns landed a body kick, but lost his balance and was briefly on his back. “Highlander” stunned Burns and dropped him with a right hand. “Durinho” attempted to fight back on the feet, but was popped with a straight right. Burns survived the round.

Burns rushed in looking for a takedown, but somehow wound up on his back momentarily. Magomedov continued to get the better of his opponent on the feet. With less than two minutes left, “Highlander” partially connected with a straight right. Despite Burns looking spent, Magomedov seemed content to just ride out a decision victory.
