Quote: Georges St-Pierre Will Return For One Last Fight
Georges St-Pierre is still one of the most recognizable names in combat sports, yet we haven’t seen him compete in 18 months now. After a razor-tight controversial split decision win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167, “Rush” left the UFC in one of the most unexpected retirements in the sport’s history.
Citing the steroid and drug testing problem in MMA as his reason for leaving, it seemed as though the former pound-for-pound king was inconsolable. Movie roles have been part of GSP’s workload for the past year, but his former manager says he’s sure he will be making a comeback soon, although not for a title run.
Check out what Stephane Patry told MMAFighting.com:
“Georges is going to come back for one fight,” Patry said. “I can’t say he’s going to come back and go on a title run and do 10 fights, but I know for sure he’s going to come back for one fight.”
“”It’s one of those things where, Georges got injured, which is something that wasn’t expected, and Anderson Silva got caught with steroids, so I mean, there’s a lot of things that have happened in the past few months that can change the scenario a little bit,” Patry said. “But I know that Georges has the will, and he wants one more fight. He doesn’t want to leave the sport with that fight with [Johny] Hendricks, I know that for a fact.”
Perhaps the ‘one fight’ Patry is eluding to is a superfight with Anderson Silva? If what Patry says is right, then the days of GSP as a champion in the sport really are over, but maybe that’s for the best. No-one likes to see their heroes go out battered and concussed, guys like Chuck Liddell suffer multiple knockouts before they realize it’s time to quit.
The UFC will return to the Montreal, Canada’s Bell Centre this weekend with UFC 186, a venue that saw GSP win four title fights during his illustrious career. Do you think the former champ has what it takes to win big and go off in to the sunset, or has he been gone too long to make it back to 100%?
On that note, who would you want to see Georges St-Pierre fight in his last appearance?
