Poll: Can Conor McGregor Defeat Jose Aldo?
Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo are on a collision course, dating back to the UFC debut of “The Notorious” back in 2013. Since then, “The Notorious” has gone on to improve his UFC record to 5-0, and also has become a superstar in the sport. Somewhat unparalleled in MMA history, McGregor became an overnight sensation, and the buzz still grows.
He returned to action last night (Sunday January 18th, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 59, and punched his ticket to a title shot against the long-reigning boss Jose Aldo. That being said, a fight with “Scarface” has been on the cards for a long time now. It’s obviously within the UFC’s best interests to get the biggest stars to fight each other, and McGregor has proved himself as the most popular contender in the division by miles.
In a world where the PPV (pay-per-view) means more than the rankings, let’s face it, it’s true, Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo might be coming too soon. No-one is denying the skill and raw ability that McGregor brings to the table; the kid really is something very special. But he is five fights in to his young UFC career. Should e have fought one more time? Maybe, as it stands though, the title fight is happening.
In most combat sports you find that legit contenders are nurtures, but McGregor is only two fights deep in to the top 10 of the division, and he took a step back for Dennis Siver. Maybe a battle against one of the top four in the weight class would have been better for legitimacy, but he arguably could’ve lost against any of the best wrestlers, and that would kill any chance of Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo fighting this year.
From what we’ve seen so far from both men, is McGregor at the right level to beat Aldo? The 25-1 champ hasn’t lost in 10 years, and has never been beaten, let alone finished at the elite level. And that’s another point, is the step up in competition too much for McGregor, or is he truly ready to beat the best, and subsequently become the UFC featherweight champion?
