Patrick Cote Survives Late Flurry To TKO Josh Burkman In Thriller
Former World Series of Fighting welterweight title challenger Josh Burkman (27-12, 1 NC) was searching for his first win since March 2014 when he stepped inside the Octagon with Patrick Cote (22-9) at UFC Fight Night 74.
While Burkman had Cote in trouble early in the final round, it was the Canadian who handed his opponent a TKO loss.
Burkman went for side kicks early in round one. He landed a thudding body kick. Cote timed a spinning back elbow and briefly got “The People’s Warrior” down. They returned to the feet and Burkman landed some strikes and later a knee to the body as “The Predator” pressed him against the fence.
Burkman broke free and landed some solid punches. Once again, Cote pressured Burkman in the clinch, but they separated quickly. They exchanged strikes and Burkman landed a knee to the chin. Cote landed some short forearms with his back against the fence. Cote popped Burkman with a right hand and had him wobbly as the round ended.
Cote missed an uppercut early in the second round. Burkman found himself against the cage again. They broke free and Burkman blocked a high kick. “The People’s Champion” took “The Predator” down with a trip and wound up in side control. Cote landed a one-two combination shortly after he stood back up. Burkman defended Cote’s takedown attempt to stay standing. Burkman blocked a body kick as round two ended.
The two fighters embraced as the final round was underway. Burkman rocked Cote and had him against the fence. Cote swung back and backed his opponent off for a bit. Burkman landed an overhand right. Cote dropped Burkman with a huge punch and followed it up with strikes and the fight was stopped.
