The Huntington Beach Bad Boy: A look back at Tito Ortiz’s five greatest fights

With Tito Ortiz being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame prior to UFC 148, now is a great time to look back at the impressive body of work put forth by Ortiz. While many newer fans of MMA have seen Ortiz weather many storms that have impeded his momentum, there was a time when he was a nigh-unbeatable champion in the Light Heavyweight division. Before injuries, age, and a bitter feud with UFC President Dana White got to the former champion, Ortiz used a brutal mix of wrestling, conditioning, and

Thumbs Down: 5 fights that didn’t happen in 2012

It is midway through 2012, and it seems to be a bad year for injuries in the UFC. Five important fights have been cancelled or postponed this year due to injury, surgery, illness or suspension. These things are all part of the fight game and have been since day one. The nature of the sport is brutal, but injuries are not isolated to fights. Most fighters suffer their injuries in training.  As well-rounded as a UFC fighter is expected to be, it is quite easy to “overtrain”, that is, put the body

Lavar Johnson: My fans come to watch me knock someone out

Almost three weeks ago, Lavar Johnson (17-5 MMA, 2-0 UFC) knocked out Pat Barry at UFC on Fox 3, and won “Knockout of the Night”. He did the same to Joey Beltran at Fox’s second UFC event back in January. Could his third UFC fight at UFC 146 earn him another “Knockout of the Night”?If all goes according to Johnson’s plan, he will: “I like to win by knocking people out, I’m going to go in there and put on a good show.”At the Open Workouts for UFC 146 Johnson said: “I’m still in shape from the last fight,

Thiago Alves: I’m going to try and break Martin Kampmann

Thiago Alves will meet Martin Kampmann in the main event of the UFC on FX 2 card, which is set to take place this Saturday in Sydney, Australia.
Alves is coming off a victory in his last bout, handing UFC newcomer Papy Abedi the first loss of his nine fight MMA career. For his part, Kampmann will also enter the fight coming off a victory, taking a decision over Rick Story at UFC 139.
Before defeating Abedi, Alves had gone 1-3 in his four previous fights, but despite that losing record he will enter

Anderson Silva: I don’t see anyone in Brazil that can beat Jon Jones

When looking at the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division at a macro level many have posited that, at this time, there are not any fighters out there that could beat the current Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones.
One person that looked at the Light Heavyweight division at a more micro level was UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Silva, recently spoke to Portal TV about his feelings on how Brazilian fighters would fare against Jon Jones. “There’s not much to say about Jon Jones. I don’t see any

Frank Mir: The sky’s the limit for a healthy Brock Lesnar

Frank Mir knows a little bit about Brock Lesnar, having faced him twice since Lesnar joined the UFC in 2008. In their first meeting, a very green Lesnar was caught in a Mir kneebar and forced to submit.  In the rematch, Lesnar got the best of Mir, earning a second round TKO.
Mir, coming off an impressive submission win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, offered his take on the upcoming bout between Lesnar and Alistair Overeem. The heavyweight scrap between Lesnar and Overeem will be the main event

Brock Lesnar pleads guilty to hunting charges

Former UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar found himself with an unwanted distraction last week when it was announced that he was facing charges in Alberta, Canada relating to a hunting trip he took in November 2010.
Today, a lawyer representing Lesnar, was able to put the case behind him with a guilty plea to one count of improper tagging of an animal.  Lesnar was fined $1,725 and given a six-month hunting suspension. Two other charges, spoiling of skin and edible flesh as well as possession of a

Who could be MMA’s biggest draw if Brock Lesnar retires?

Regular Lowkickers remember the question I asked last week. Can MMA’s elite be as
popular as Manny Pacquiao? Now is the perfect time for someone to step to the plate
with the biggest draw in our sport’s history now out indefinitely. As announced in
an emergency UFC conference call, Brock Lesnar for a second time has been diagnosed
with diverticulosis. For the main event at UFC 131, Lesnar has been switched with
Shane Carwin to face Junior dos Santos.
