Olivier Aubin-Mercier Pressures & Controls Tony Sims For Victory In Saskatoon
The first of two lightweight bouts on the main card of UFC Fight Night 74 went down in Saskatoon. Tristar Gym’s Olivier Aubin-Mercier (7-1) met Elevation Fight Team member Tony Sims (12-3) for the second fight on the main card.
Less than 30 seconds into the fight, Aubin-Mercier pushed Sims against the fence and eventually took him down. “The Quebec Kid” kept “2.0’s” back against the cage until he lifted him up and dropped him yet again. Aubin-Mercier took his opponent’s back, got a body lock and went for a rear-naked choke. Sims avoided the choke all the way until the round concluded.
Round two got started and Aubin-Mercier’s takedown attempt was stuffed. “The Quebec Kid” was able to drive “2.0” towards the fence and got him down. The Canadian momentarily had Sims’ back, but “2.0” was able to pop back up. Aubin-Mercier slammed his opponent to the mat and wound up in guard. The story of round two was that Aubin-Mercier’s pressure was too much for Sims to avoid. Aubin-Mercier stuck to Sims like glue the entire round.
It wasn’t long before Aubin-Mercier went for a takedown in the final round. Sims was able to avoid it and landed hammerfists and elbows as Aubin-Mercier looked to finish his takedown. The fight was back standing until Sims went for a guillotine as Aubin-Mercier shot in. The submission attempt failed and “The Quebec Kid” took the back of “2.0.” The fight ended as Sims avoided a submission.
Unsurprisingly, all three judges had Aubin-Mercier winning the fight.
Final Result: Olivier Aubin-Mercier def. Tony Sims via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
