Official: Edgar vs. Maynard III fight cancelled (Updated)
According to a report from MMAFighting.com and officially announced on UFC.com the trilogy between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard will have to wait. Both fighters suffered injuries during their respective training camps. To replace Edgar and Maynard for the main event at UFC 130 will be Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill and the co-main event of Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson. The welterweight bout between Thiago Alves and Rick Story will also be promoted to the main Pay-Per-View card as well. Below is the official announcement from UFC.com.
The highly-anticipated third bout between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and number one contender Gray Maynard will have to wait a little longer, as it was announced today that both fighters have suffered injuries in training camp that will take them out of the UFC 130 main event on May 28th.
Stepping up into the UFC 130 main event slot is the bout between former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Matt “The Hammer” Hamill, and moving to the Pay-Per-View card will be the Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story welterweight showdown.
In Spike TV prelim action, Tim Boetsch‘s middleweight debut against Kendall Grove will join the bantamweight fight between Miguel Angel Torres and Demetrious Johnson.
Update:
Light Heavyweight collision between Rampage Jackson and Matt Hamill has been officially promoted to the main event, as the Welterweight contest between Rick Story and Thiago Alves will fill in the missing fifth main card slot. Tim Boetsch’s Middleweight debut against Kendall Grove will be shown on SpikeTV instead of the Story-Alves bout.
Also, according to the UFC President Dana White, the fight between Edgar and Maynard could take place in August or September. MMAMania.com brings the quote: “(The injuries) are not that serious,” said UFC President Dana White. “They’re going to be out like six to eight weeks. So if everything goes right and they heal the same, who knows, maybe we can do this fight in August or September.”
