MMA Fighter & Army Veteran Shot 7 Times During UCC Attack Receives Huge Donations

Chris Mintz Chael Sonnen

Tragedy struck Umpqua Community College in Oregon this week, as a crazed gunman opened fire on campus, killing 10 people including himself. That’s not who we are here to report today though. Chris Mintz, army veteran and former MMA fighter pictured above with Chael Sonnen, performed a great deed for his fellow man on the day of this horrific shooting.

When the gunman opened fire on Thursday on the Oregon campus, Mintz did not run away, instead running towards the fire.  Attempting to stop the terrorist hold the door open to enable frightened students and other innocent people caught in the crossfire to escape the mayhem. CNN had some quotes from Mintz’s aunt:

“Tries to block the door to keep the gunman from coming in, Gets shot three times,” his aunt said. “Hits the floor. Looks up at the gunman and says, ‘It’s my son’s birthday today.”

The gunman, who we haven’t even attempted to identify, shot Mintz seven times during his heroic attempt to defend the his child and the rest of the school. Mintz is now in hospital with two broken legs among his list of injuries. The world should take a lesson from this example of selflessness and courage in the face of dire odds.

Mintz, who has an amateur MMA and wrestling background, is lucky to be alive by all accounts, but there’s a touching part to this story too. A ‘Go Fund Me’ page was set up to try and raise $10K to cover costs during Mintz’s hospital stay, and has raised a staggering $500,000 in just 15 hours. That page can be donated to here.
