Melvin Guillard: Jamie Varner was too scared to fight me

Top UFC Lightweight contender Melvin Guillard gave his version on why he wasn’t fighting Jamie Varner in the main card opener of TUF 16 Finale event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to Guillard, Varner was simply too scared to get inside the Octagon, looking for a quick way out of the fight. The Young Assassin stated he still respects Varner as a person, but lost any respect to him as a fighter.

The official reason behind Varner’s withdrawal just hours prior to the bout was illness. It’s not the first time such thing happens in the UFC. Two years ago, Alessio Sakara pulled out of his scheduled UFC 122 co-main event encounter with Jorge Rivera due to flu-like symptoms. Varner is fresh off one of the biggest victories of his Mixed Martial Arts career, and would definitely like another top name ‘W’.

155lbs contest between Jamie Varner and Melvin Guillard will now take place at UFC 155 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Here’s the quote from Melvin Guillard (via MMAMania.com):

“I think what he done tonight was very cowardly. I saw the look in his eyes at weigh-ins, he didn’t want to fight me. I’ll just leave it at that, I’m not going to sit here and bash the guy, I have a level of respect for him as a person, but as a fighter I lost all respect for him. I just hope he don’t back out again. They might want to have me some other guys lined up to make weight just in case he backs out again.”
