McGregor Could Headline An Ireland Stadium Show Soon
UFC interim featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor seems to be all about the numbers. The Irish superstar knows just the right way to promote a fight, and his pay-per-view (PPV) numbers are through the roof.
One of McGregor’s dreams is to fight in a huge stadium in his home of Ireland, specifically Croke Park, which holds around 80,000 fans. That dream may be able to come to fruition sooner than later.
McGregor is set to take on reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the highly-anticipated, and long-awaited title unifier bout, which is set for December 12, 2015 at UFC 194. Recently speaking with NRL Footy Show, UFC president Dana White said that if McGregor becomes the champion, then his first defense will be in Croke Park:
“If he beats Jose Aldo in Las Vegas in December, the next fight will be in Croke Park,” White said. “We told him he could defend his title at Croke Park.”
Although the event would be absolutely massive, it is indeed a difficult place to schedule a fight there. White continued on, saying that the chance of rain, along with curfew restrictions make it tough to hold an event in this particular stadium:
“They have a curfew at night where you can’t get permits to stay out that late and do an event there,” he said.
“You lose about 25 to 30 percent on pay-per-view being in another country. The amount of money for production for Croke Park, being outside – I can guarantee you it’s going to rain. I’m not a meteorologist, but I’ll bet you it’s going to rain.”
Despite there being numerous obstacles, a card headlined by McGregor in Croke Park would certainly do absolutely huge numbers for the UFC.
That being said, the “Notorious” one has a hard test in front of him.
