Matt Mitrione steps in to face Roy Nelson for injured Shane Carwin

Shane Carwin‘s return to the Octagon against Roy Nelson is delayed due to a knee injury he suffered during camp. This left The Ultimate Fighter Finale’s main event between the two coaches in limbo. But thanks to a fighter who shared the TUF house as a competitor with Roy Nelson, we now have a main event.

TUF alumni Matt Mitrione will return to his stomping grounds to take on Roy Nelson at the TUF 16 finale in Las Vegas on December 15 at the Hard Rock Hotel. Although the bad blood brewing between Carwin and Nelson was supposed to culminate with a throwdown between the two coaches, the injury bug that has plagued Carwin struck again and forced him to pull out of the fight yesterday.

The UFC quickly scrambled to find a replacement as names such as Struve and Barry were thrown around. TUF 10 veteran Matt Mitrione, who is coming off of his first professional loss at the hands of Cheick Kongo at UFC 137. Both he and Nelson will be looking to bounce back from losses as they clash in the main event.
