Matt Mitrione Reveals Full Extent Of Injury, Blames Eye Pokes
It was a tough night for Matt Mitrione in Boston, but the picture he just posted to Twitter has even more bad news for the UFC heavyweight…
UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione was hoping to test the waters of free agency with a victory over Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 81, but it didn’t quite work out that way. After a tough few rounds with ‘Hapa,”Meathead’ eventually succumbed to strikes in the final stanza. Officially a TKO, Mitrione suffered a hard loss at the worst time possible. But it wasn’t that cut and dry for everyone.
Two eye pokes from Browne throughout the fight have sparked debate in the time since, and a grizzly replay of the moments after the fight show the harrowing injury that Mitrione suffered to his eye. Was this a punch or poke?
Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones may have joked about the fouls during the fight, but to ‘Meathead’ this is no laughing matter whatsoever. He also suffered a shoulder injury, meaning he could have trouble finding work regardless of where he decides to fight next.
Taking to Twitter, Mitrione not only revealed the extent of the injury to his eye, but also blames the eye pokes for his loss to Browne:
Broken orbital floor. This and the shoulder happened after the 2nd eye poke. I don’t think they would’ve happened pic.twitter.com/wFn1NC3j5Y

Ouch, who would have thought that nasty swollen eye could have got any worse?
So what are your thoughts on this brutal TKO at UFC Fight Night 81? Did Mitrione suffer a controversial loss, or were the eye pokes just a precursor to the inevitable ending? Many fighters have been subject to similar debates in the past, and not much has been done to combat the eye pokes in MMA to this day.
