Martin Kampmann: GSP should be sending me thank-you letters
UFC Welterweight Martin Kampmann is no stranger to living on the edge. He stood toe-to-toe with power strikers Thiago Alves and Jake Ellenberger in his last two respective bouts, and was on the verge of being brutally finished in both. However, he came back to finish both fights from behind, a testament to his toughness, tenacity, and perseverance. The win over Ellenberger earned him a chance to face Johny Hendricks at UFC 154 for a perceived title shot in the stacked UFC 170 lbs. division, although that has not been officially announced. Kampmann believes a win should definitely earn the shot, and he is looking to get a bout with GSP should he defeat Carlos Condit at UFC 154. Today, The Hitman spoke up about the longtime king Georges St. Pierre:
“I’m doing GSP a favor because I’m beating all the tough guys in the division. He should be sending me thank-you letters. I don’t know why GSP is so anxious to get knocked out by Anderson Silva. If he wants to get knocked out, he can just take a fight with me.” via BloodyElbow.com
Speaking out against the rumored superfight between GSP and Anderson Silva, Kampmann shows some rarely seen trash-talk, this time directed at one of MMA’s most vaunted superstars. Kampmann also seems to be ultra-confident heading into his bout with Hendricks, having trained with him before. He continued on:
“I feel confident about the fight with Johny. We’ve trained together in the past. Obviously we know each other well and are aware of each other’s strong points. Johny is a great wrestler, has knockout power, but he’s not super technical. I have to watch out for the big left hand and his wrestling is always a factor. I feel I can win this fight in a lot of different ways, and I have a lot of confidence going in. For sure I believe a win over Hendricks gets me the title shot. I feel I should have been given the shot a long time ago. I have fought some of the best welterweights in the world and every single fight I get is against one of the top contenders.”
Kampmann is talking quite the tough game following his three-fight win streak, and could be on the cusp of greatness sometime next year. Only time will tell, but Kampmann currently has his hands full with Hendricks. What will the Welterweight landscape look like after UFC 154 comes to an end?
