Marloes Coenen is coming for Ronda Rousey after win at inaugural Invicta FC
Right after she claimed a dominant victory in the very first Invicta FC, Marloes Coenen wasted no time in calling out Strikeforce Women’s champion Ronda Rousey, who owns the belt that Coenen once possessed. After putting on a ground-game clinic by utilizing short elbows and beating Romy Ruyssen handily, Coenen looks to be back on her winning ways. She had not fought since she lost a title bout to Miesha Tate in July of 2011. Coenen had the following to say, via mixedmartialarts.com:
“It was a long hiatus since my last fight. I’m not too happy with my performance, but I promise you, next time I will do better. Ronda, I’m coming for you.”
Coenen’s strong words towards Rousey add some much-needed suspense to the Women’s MMA arena on an evening where the first-ever all-female card debuted. While the male side of MMA has many faces to feature, vocal fighters like Coenen could work wonders for the female side of the sport. Rousey, an undefeated judo whiz who has looked nigh-unstoppable in running over each opponent, sits atop the Strikeforce bantamweight division.
A Coenen-Rousey battle could be a great step towards more popularity for WMMA, with two recognizable fighters possessing legitimate skills going head-to-head. However, there are many roadblocks to this bout being made, such as the much-publicized issue of Coenen’s release from the Zuffa umbrella last summer. She would have to someway make it back to the good graces of Zuffa to fight Rousey, who is most likely not going anywhere else soon. Coenen sits at an impressive 20-5 in her career, does she have what it takes to beat the champion Ronda Rousey?
