Not even rival and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov believes Conor McGregor is actually retired.

“The Notorious” announced on Twitter recently that he is retiring from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Apparently, McGregor and the UFC were unable to come to an agreement on his return. If he does want to come back, the Irishman’s Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) suspension ends this month.

The former “champ champ” was previously suspended for six months after his post-UFC 229 brawl. Should McGregor return soon, one opponent that might make sense is Nurmagomedov. He was the last man to defeat McGregor inside the Octagon, submitting him in the fourth round in October.

Speaking at a Moscow university recently, Khabib compared his former foe to a “jealous wife” (via Denis Geyko):

“No, I think there’s some things that Conor wants and I think that Conor wants to get together face to face, he and I, and we probably will in the next couple of weeks and we’ll get this thing figured out.”

As for Khabib, he will have to wait until this summer before he can compete. He’s serving a nine-month suspension for his involvement in the UFC 229 incident. However, the UFC is targeting a September return for the lightweight champ, with Abu Dhabi being discussed as a possible location.
