Junior dos Santos is ready to submit Cain Velasquez
Last night, UFC Heavyweight champion appeared on MMAJunkie Radio, and his comments about his UFC 155 headliner were not in his ordinary range of gameplans. Many know that he trains with legendary BJJ practitioner Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, but with such effective boxing, he has had little need to show off any skills he has in this arena. Now, it is widely thought that Cain Velasquez will be in better shape this time around, and expect a longer fight in which Velasquez attempts to use his vaunted wrestling to take the the fight to the ground. According to dos Santos, this is quite alright by him, stating the following:
“I prefer to fight on my feet. I prefer to keep it standing because I’m very confident in that area and I believe I can knock anyone out in the world. But I’m not going to go to the ground if the guy doesn’t take me down. Cain is a really good wrestler, and he’s got a good chance to take me down. If he takes me down and holds me there, then you guys will see my jiu-jitsu.”
I train a lot of jiu-jitsu, too, and I can tell you I’m ready to submit someone. If the fight goes to the ground and I can’t come back to my feet, I’m going to be looking to submit him.”
Quite the bold claim from arguably MMA’s best boxer. But with seemingly supreme confidence it his all-around game, it’s quite hard to argue against the champ until someone figures him out. Velasquez was found out to have been seriously injured prior to the first fight, but then again, so was JDS. Will Velasquez stand much of a better chance when the two square off again on December 29th?
