Jose Aldo versus Frankie Edgar rumored for UFC 156 in Brazil

5627101358 073120a313 zHot on the heels of the great pay-per-view success of UFC 153 in Rio, news comes that the UFC will be making a return to Brazil sooner than later. Brazilian favorite Jose Aldo is reported to make his return to the Octagon against Frankie Edgar for the Featherweight title, tentatively set for January 19th.

Already once scheduled to fight Edgar for the 145 lb. strap as the headliner of UFC 153, those plans were nixed when the champion suffered a foot injury in a motorcycle accident.

According to Brazilian site No Mundo das Lutas, the exact location of the event remains unknown right now, but possible venues include Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Florianopolis, and perhaps even a return to the ever-popular Rio. Aldo is extremely popular as an athlete in Brazil, thanks in part to his rough upbringing as a troubled child on the streets of Brazil. His last fight was back in January in Brazil, where he knocked out Chad Mendes with an amazing turning knee and subsequently ran into the crowd to celebrate amongst the masses of cheering fans. Frankie Edgar has shown the heart of champion in his last two fights at Lightweight, last seen dropping the belt to Benson Henderson in a highly debatable split decision. Now, his focus turns to Aldo and an all-new weight class.

UFC 156 is an event that is still coming together, with nothing official confirmed by UFC executives. Wherever it takes place, Aldo versus Edgar should turn out to be a blockbuster event. Yesterday it was rumored that Rashad Evans would perhaps face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in Las Vegas at UFC 156 around Super Bowl weekend, but now it appears that the UFC has decided to schedule a numbered event for the month of January. With the success that the UFC has enjoyed throughout the country, why not?
