Jorge Masvidal Wants ‘Easy Money Fight’ Against Donald Cerrone At UFC 178
UFC on FOX 12 lightweight competitor Jorge Masvidal will square off against highly touted Daron Cruickshank tonight (Sat. July 26, 2014), in an attempt to improve his win streak to two after decisioning Pat Healy at UFC on FOX 11. The former regional grappling boss and street fighter ‘Gamebred’ doesn’t seem content on focusing his attention on the dangerous ‘Detroit Superstar’ though.
In a recent interview with FOX Sports, Masvidal said he is interested in a future bout with Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at UFC 178:
“I want some easy money. He’s pretty tough against other guys that ain’t tough, I ain’t trying to act like a bad ass, but punching and kicking is part of the game. He hits people and they just start breaking all of a sudden before he knocks them out. I want to get in there and show him what’s up.”
Cerrone is currently riding a hot streak of four fights and four finishes, against Jim Miller, Adriano Martins, Evan Dunham and Edson Barboza. Needless to say, the former WEC standout is hot property in the UFC lightweight division right now, and ‘Gamebred’ seems to really want a piece:
“(Cerrone is) a tough dude, you have to be able to take a punch, you have to be able to give a punch. You gotta be mentally tough. I just think when it comes to getting into deeper waters, I think I’m way tougher than him and I can put out a lot more than he can.”
As well as a potential UFC 178 bout with ‘Cowboy’, Masvidal expressed his interest in fighting on the UFC 180 card in November, which goes down for the first time ever in Mexico:
“I’m dying to get on that card, that’s my dream. Give me the toughest guys in the division to fight,” he said. “Just keep lining them up. I’ll fight the toughest dudes. I don’t like fighting guys not in the top 10. It doesn’t really get me where I want to be.”
We’ll have to see how Masvidal gets on against Cruickshank first, who is currently riding a pretty impressive two-fight knockout spree. Fantastic head kick Kos over Eric Koch and Mike Rio have ‘The Detroit Superstar’ riding a ton of hype in to UFC on FOX 12, but could the street fighter from Miami derail him?
If he is victorious, would a fight against Cerrone be on the cards? ‘Cowboy’ is never one to turn down a fight, but I’d imagine that a top five opponent would make sense for Cerrone after smashing Miller so convincingly.
