Jon Jones vs. Anthony Johnson Targeted For May

After securing the biggest win of his career with a shocking first-round knockout over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on FOX 14 last weekend (January 24, 2015), Anthony “Rumble” Johnson deservedly earned himself the next shot at reigning light heavyweight king Jon “Bones” Jones.

With both men recently fighting (Jones’ latest victory coming over Daniel Cormier at January 3’s UFC 182), it wasn’t clear when this now highly anticipated title bout would go down, but it appears if it may be sooner than expected. UFC President Dana White appeared on Wednesday’s (January 28, 2015) edition of The Jim Rome Show to discuss a possible date:

“We’re looking to do that fight in May,” White said. “I don’t have the exact date, but May.”

Although White doesn’t have a date, it would likely be UFC 187, which is set to take place on May 23, 2015. This would make sense, as Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor was reportedly being targeted for this same card, but the blockbuster featherweight scrap was recently pushed back to mid-summer, leaving an opening for Jones and Johnson.

This card is also the UFC’s Memorial Day Weekend card, which is always held in Las Vegas, and usually ends up being a big card. Of course no contracts or official announcements have been made, but this is the direction the company appears to be going.
