Jon Jones Thankful ‘Rumble’ Retired: That Weed Must Have Been Good

Anthony Johnson

Jon Jones is happy he never had to fight the former freight train called ‘Rumble.’

Jones will return to the cage against knockout striker Anthony Smith in the main event of tomorrow’s (Sat., March 2, 2019) UFC 235 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Yet there was another match-up with a prior slugger “Bones” is thankful he could avoid. Four years ago, Jones was scheduled to face former title contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the main event of UFC 187. But Jones’ now-infamous hit-and-run that left a pregnant Albuquerque woman with a broken arm forced a stop to the dream match.

A Thankful Jones

During The Anatomy of UFC 235: Vlog Series (via BJPenn.com), Jones detailed why he’s happy “Rumble” retired. Johnson took a position in the booming marijuana industry. While “Bones” didn’t understand the decision due to his position in the sport, he’s happy he didn’t have to get hit by ‘Rumble’:

“Thank God that boy retired, I don’t know what got into him. That weed must have been good! That made no sense, he was right there as the scariest dude around. He ain’t never getting down to light heavyweight again, thank God.”

“Rumble” was definitely the most feared puncher in the UFC during his time as a top contender. He met Daniel Cormier at UFC 187 and lost via submission. Johnson climbed back up the ladder by destroying Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira to earn another shot at ‘DC.’ He was submitted yet again in the rematch at April 2017’s UFC 210.

Johnson retired after the loss and has been seen bulking up to monstrous proportions in his post-retirement life. In addition to his marijuana venture, ‘Rumble’ has also taken a job with Bare Knuckle FC, but not as a fighter. He has hinted at a return to fighting on a couple of occasions, but Jones believes he’ll never get back down to 205 because of his current training.

And he’s just fine with that.
